Setting up Chat Client

You can setup your chat clients like Yahoo messenger, MSN messenger, or GTalk to use your SSH Tunnel.

Here we explain how to setup Pidgin chat client.

Pidgin is a popular chat client program. It helps you import all your friends from different accounts like yahoo, facebook, gtalk, msn, ..., in one single place. Moreover, it can help you encrypt your conversations, and send them trough the SSH tunnel.

Instructions to set it up to use the ssh tunnel

  1. Download and install it from here
  2. In the Pidgin main window click 'Tools' at the top to pull down the Tools Menu. Select 'Preferences' from the menu. This opens the Preferences window.
  3. Click the 'Network' tab.
  4. Under 'Proxy Server' where it says 'Proxy type:' and has 'No proxy' selected, click on 'No proxy' to pull down the menu and select 'SOCKS 5'.
  5. Where it says 'Host:' enter localhost.
  6. Where it says 'Port:' enter 1085
  7. Click the 'Close' button.
  8. Close Pidgin entirely and re-open it. Log in when it asks you to and you are now connected securely.
