Settings on your side (Provider)
- Follow the steps here
- Find out what your external IP address is by clicking here.
- You will need to send your external IP address together with the username/password from step 1 to your friend.
- If you are using a router (usually for wireless access), you need to set up your router so that it forwards port 22 to your computer. This is a very common task:
- Find out what your internal IP address is. Refer here to find out how.
- Setup your router to forward port 22 to your internal IP address.

- Update1 [for troubleshooting]: If you are using a router, make sure the minimum package size, MTU, is set at 1500.
Settings on your friend's side (User)
- You need the IP address and the username/password from previous steps.
- Follow the steps here

- Update2: For setting up your chat client to use the ssh tunnel visit this page.
- Update3: If you are using Firefox, you might want to install FoxyProxy plug-in so that you can switch faster between using and not using the tunnel.
General Tips
- Keep your IP address and username/password secret. Do not share it with people whom you don't trust. Do not send it in an email. Use a more secure way.
- Use your friend's Internet connection responsibly. Do not use it for illegal purposes! Do not use it for illegal contents!

- How does this work?
- Your friend (the user) is behind the firewall, but you (the provider) have free access to the Internet. The user can setup his/her computer to establish a secure encrypted tunnel to your computer, and use your Internet connection. This is very similar to the method described here.
- How secure is this link?
- This link is highly secure. It uses ssh protocol and all the information and requests are encrypted.
- Can my friend have access to my files?
- No! As long as you follow the steps correctly
- What kind of OS do I need to have?
- This tutorial only covers windows operating systems. However, it is very straightforward to use use this on other operating systems. In Linux and Mac, you just need to setup openSSH package.
- Do I need a PhD to setup my computer? Does my friend need to a PhD to setup his/her own computer?
- We think it is very straightforward to setup both sides. Anyone with basic computer knowledge should be able to do this.
- I setup my side, but my grandma on the other side does not really have good computer skills. What can I do?
- You can set up her side for her. You can use remote desktop programs like Teamviewer.
