I was home from work that morning. I heard a heavy "thud" shake my basement apartment and walked up the stairs to street level to look.
In the sky I saw smoke rising up and knew this was wrong. That was where the Pentagon is. Not where smoke should be arising from. I lived on Capitol Hill at the time, went out into the streets of the District of Columbia that day and observed: no one new what to do. Not even those in charge.
I live even closer to own own "Ground Zero" today. As a resident of Arlington, VA, and a member of the Virginia Defense Force, I'm commited to training myself and my troops to learn how to react in an emergency. We're here to help our neighbors when needed. Where will I be when the time comes to serve? I'll be present or accounted for.
This year, I'll be at drill learning how to be get better prepared to respond when needed. I'll be with others who care about helping out as much as I do. I won't forgot how we all felt years ago, and I won't be alone.
