The purpose of the forum is to view the current
economic crisis through a gender lens, exploring the specific challenges
for women, identifying potential opportunities and developing skills and
coordinated action for improving the economic prospects for women in Ventura County. Lilly Ledbetter, the namesake of the Fair Pay Act of 2009, will be
our special luncheon speaker. Ledbetter was highly instrumental in
creating the Fair Pay Act which amends the Civil Rights Act of
1964, allowing women to sue under the Equality Pay Act citing sex
discrimination in the workplace. The program will include an overview of the Gendered Political
Economy Past and Present; Budget Crisis Impact on Social Services, Foreclosures
& Bankruptcy, Retirement Fund Loss, Loss of Job and/or Benefits and
Domestic Crisis; plus Skill and Action Workshops on Disenfranchised Women;
Transforming the Culture of Poverty; Power Organizing for Women; Policy
Solutions and Nontraditional & Green Jobs, Career Ladders and
Entrepreneurship for Women. |
