Below is our volunteer form. Choose committees or events in which you would like to participate. Check the appropriate boxes and click "submit" when finished.
If you prefer, print the form, complete it, and send to school with your child.
Whichever method you choose, someone will contact you once the form is received. Descriptions of our programs/events appear below the form.
Birthday Club - Kinry and Vassar Time: less than an hour per month
Book Fair – Kinry and Vassar Time: Five days during lunch plus one evening during week. Encourage the collecting of Box Tops at Vassar Road and Kinry Road. There is a website for ideas to make collecting fun with contests, etc. Copying and counting of Box Tops will be done.
A week before the graduation, coordinate volunteer parents from each class to provide 2-3 desserts/snacks for their own 5th grade class. Desserts/snacks brought to the school the morning of the graduation. The teachers will pick them up in the office at Kinry. Obtain paper goods and sort in office for each teacher. Obtain and set-up decorations morning of event. Time: Making calls/sending e-mails or letters to parents. One hour for set-up at event
Earth Day Event Earth Day Bags are colored in connection with a program that Stop and Shop has. This date has a lot of possibilities for organizing activities for kids. Ideas are welcome. Earth Day is in April.
Flag Day - Vassar and Kinry This is a new committee. Ideas are endless. In 2010 Kinry had the challenge to write a poem or story about what the American Flag means to them. Vassar students were encouraged to wear red, white and blue.
Flowers on the Grounds/School Beautification – Vassar and Kinry Clean out planters and plant flowers at the front entrance of each school. Some weeding may need to be done. Work with Girl Scout troops who usually help with cleanup.
Research vendors to stage one major fall fundraiser and one major spring fundraiser. PTA Board helps decide company. Smaller fundraisers can also be staged. In 2010-11, fall fundraiser is Joe Corbi’s pizza kits and cookie dough and there is a Make your own Artwork program.
Grandparents Breakfast - Vassar Organize a breakfast for students and their grandparents/special adults. Procure donations of baked goods if possible. Get drinks, tablecloths, paper goods. Send home flyer announcing event and create list of those who respond. Have volunteer take photos of each child/grandparent together as they enter.
Grant Writer Research grants offered to schools and non-profit organizations and write proposals seeking funds for programs, activities and equipment. Time: all work can be done from home
Holiday Gift Shop – Kinry and Vassar Work with a company to stage holiday gift shop. They provide all goods and materials needed. Set up on school stage and get volunteers to help during the week. Send home flyers announcing event. Time: Five days during lunch and then one evening
Ice Cream Social – Vassar Get ice cream donation from Stewarts corporate office. Buy paper goods and tablecloths. Time: make/distribute flyers. Event lasts two hours.
Instrument Zoo – Vassar Find 10-12 volunteers to escort small groups of first and second graders during event. The students listen to 6th graders from Kinry play instruments and then have a discussion. Time: Two hours in May.
Kindergarten Registration – Vassar Get volunteers to help office staff with copying of documents for incoming kindergarten parents. Usually happens late February/early March.
Newcomers Picnic – Vassar Organize picnic for incoming new students at end of August. Get list of students from main office and make name tags. Get volunteers to man table at front door and outside to talk about PTA and answer questions. Direct parents to classrooms. Hand out ice pops to kids. Time: Two hours in late August.
Newsletter Get news from both schools, take photos, write articles. Layout newsletter and distribute at schools and online. Time: Varies. Newsletter published every other month.
Nominating Committee Create a team of three members to search for volunteers to serve on PTA board and various committees. Report at PTA meetings in April and May. Time: About an hour at each meeting.
Parents as Reading Partners – Kinry and Vassar Students take part in month-long event to track daily reading. Parent volunteers are needed to make copies, distribute copies to students and book distribution at the end of the event. Event takes place in spring.
Plant Sale Flyers and order forms are distributed and plants are ordered from upstate nursery. On day of delivery, volunteers are needed to sort orders alphabetically. Distribution takes place after school in May at Vassar. Time: 1 to 3 hours in May
Programs Work with BOCES and other educational centers to provide programs for students at both schools.
School Directory Letters are created and sent home to parents to fill in contact information which is then put on a spreadsheet and distribute electronically. Time: Varies on typing speed.
School Pictures – Kinry and Vassar Work with photographers and help students with clothing issues or hair brushing and help facilitate classes going in and out of photo room. Time: A few hours one day in fall and again in spring.
School Store – Kinry and Vassar Every other week during lunch period, staff the school store and sell various items to students. Be in charge of money and fill out cash form to return funds to treasurer. Time: About 3 hours twice a month.
Science Fair – Kinry and Vassar Send out sign-up forms and make sure there are enough tables for students to participate in the science fair. Obtain gift certificates to raffle off at event. Have check-in table at front entrance. Make participation certificate for each student. Time: 2-3 hours night of event in March.
Sixth Grade Committee – Kinry Group of parents needed to work on various sixth-grade events throughout the school year and then the graduation and dance at the end of the year.
Snow Cones – Kinry Set up with rental company to get snow cone machine and, if needed, syrup and cups. Purchase ice. Have about five volunteers on hand to help make snow cones, which are given out to Kinry students during recess. Time: Two hours, second Friday after school begins.
Spirit Week – Vassar and Kinry Create and distribute flyers. First Wednesday of every month, children and staff should wear school colors or school shirt. The final three days of school are crazy days (Hat day, Tropical/hawaiian day, etc.) Time: making flyer and copies
Talent Show – Vassar and Kinry Send out flyers and keep track of students who sign up to participate. Sig up for use of room and hold two rehearsals before Friday night event. Time: Three days, two hours a day.
Teacher/Staff Appreciation – Vassar and Kinry During the first week of May, stage an informal breakfast for staff on one day and a luncheon on one day. Send forms home asking parents to make a dish for the lunch. Another flyer asks students and/or parents to make a thank you card for their teacher or another staff member and then bring in a flower for the teacher. Time: Making flyer/copies, setting up breakfast and luncheon.
Website We are changing over our website to better match that of the school district. Someone with HTML experience would be great for this job. We continually update the site with topical information, Box Tops updates, newsletter and calendar events. Time: Varies – about an hour a week.
Yearbook/Memory Book Coordinate with parent volunteers to take photos and create a yearbook page for each class of the school. Work with photographer to layout books. Send out order forms to parents and take orders. Time: Varies.
