True North Media House

Statement of Principles & Operating Policies


Statement of Principles: {note: in other words, rules of engagement or something}

True North Media House ("TMNH") is a campaign and facility co-created by volunteers to encourage citizen and alternative coverage of International arts, culture and sporting events around Vancouver. As a group, we aim to be accepting of diverse opinions, traditions, and manners of acting. With this aim in mind, be aware that participation in TNMH dependent upon adhering to a set of common principles which both make a cooperative atmosphere and prevent misunderstandings with external organizations.

Responsibility for Work - TNMH participants own the content they produce at the facility and are exclusively responsible for opinions expressed and images published. 

Kindness & Equality - Interactions with other TNMH participants are expected to be civil respectful and polite - TNMH will not tolerate hate speech, bigotry or intolerant attitudes.

Openness - All organizational business and participation is translucent. Almost everything is publicly publishable and participants must identify themselves by real names.

Diversity of Opinions - TNMH does not have a political stance about newsworthy events and aim to give all opinions possible a platform for expression.

Share Wisely - Use TNMH resources to understand constraints, claim your work as your own and use the opportunity to share with others with creative commons licesning

Access to Facilities - Participation is contingent upon the logistical requirements of running the facility (hours, numbers, etc.) in other words, you can inly use it when there is space and time

Breaking the rules or violating principles will result in loss of privileges ...

Statement of Principles:

True North Media House participation is dependent upon:

Openness - All organizational business and participation is transparent. Everything is public and participants must identify themselves - everything is bloggable, publishable and 100% transparent

Responsibility - Participants are responsible for what they create and how they host it - use the True North Media House resources to understand constraints, claim your work

Kindness - respectful interactions with others and facility,

Equality - No bigots, racist, hate speech, etc. - share, be nice

Fairness - discuss whatever you like as long as you claim it as yours

User Policy/ Centre Agreement

Sections needed:

-       How we are going to allocate the space within the center – is it first come first served or are we going to allow people to book time - i.e. video editing. equipment

-       Need to develop the criteria for admission to the centre

o   Are we going to have passes to indicate that they’re allowed to be there? If so, we’re going to have to outline a policy on wearing their badge

-       Expected behaviour – this will be a bulked up version of the above statement of principles

o   What will happen if people break the rules

-       Legal disclaimers absolving us of responsibility re: content produced, people getting hurt on premise, stolen items, etc…
