1. When is Religious Education (traditionally known as Sunday School)?
- RE is during the worship service, which starts at 10:30. The Pre-K through 8th grade normally begin in the sanctuary with the adults and then head off to classes after the Story for All Ages, which is about 15 minutes into the service. RE runs until 11:45.
2. How are the classes set up?
- There are currently 7 RE classes- Chalice Tots Nursery (for 0-2+ years), Pre-K, K-1st, 2nd-3rd, 4th-5th, 6th-8th and 9th-12th.
3. Do visitors need to fill out any paperwork?
- If you are a first time visitor, no, you do not. But, if you plan on returning (which we hope you do!), then please complete an RE Registration form, which you will find attached below.
4. What do the middle school youth do?
- The middle school youth have a standard RE curriculum during RE except for the second Sunday of the month. On that day, they meet as the Junior Youth Group (JYG). JYG works on social action projects, fun events and other activities to help keep our pre-teens and teens engaged in church life.
5. What do the high school youth do?
- Our high school youth, also known as YRUU (Young Religious UUs), have 3 different components to their programming. They work on at least 4 different social action projects through the year, have a monthly youth worship (which they design and lead) and meet in small groups to discuss UU topics of interest to them. They meet every Sunday and do not start in the sanctuary first with the children.
6. What do the kids learn?
- Unitarian Universalism is rich in heritage and tradition. We work to give children and youth a chance to know our UU heritage, explore their core beliefs and appreciate the world around them. Each year the RE Committee chooses a theme and then curricular programs centered around that theme. The current theme and curricula can be found here.
6. How are the adult volunteers screened?
- All RE Volunteers complete a screening questionairre, get a background check and sign a Code of Ethics (which can be seen here). UUFHC is a Safe Congregation, which means that we have policies and procedures in place to ensure the safety of our children to the best of our ability. This includes, among other things: the screening process, a policy that maintains 2 adults in the room with all children and youth, and an emergency procedures plan.
7. Do you offer childcare?
- In the interest of supporting families at UUFHC, we do offer childcare for events and meetings. If there is no childcare already set-up, the committee chair in charge of the event or meeting must contact the DRE at least 5 days prior in order to get the childcare needs covered.
8. How many children are in an RE class?
- Anywhere from 5 - 15 for regular RE class. Multi-age programming, such as Children's Worship includes all classes at once, which has at least 4 adullts volunteering for every session.
9. What should we wear?
- UUFHC is a fairly casual atmosphere where both jeans and t-shirts AND suits and ties are completely acceptable. We have no air conditioning, so dress accordingly for the summer.
10. How much does the program cost?
- There is no monetary cost for Religious Education at UUFHC. However, it is a cooperative program and parents are expected to give of their time and talents. UUFHC's income is based primarily on the yearly pledges of our members and friends. When pledging for the year and thinking about the value of Religious Education for your family, please keep in mind that it costs UUFHC approximately $380 per child per year to run our RE program.
