I used to live on one of the oldest Island in the Cook Islands call Mangaia,in a little village call Ivirua (Paradise under the Sun).My art work is a tradition Mangaian Family Portrait in Mangaian pattern not in pictures. Just moved to NZ a month ago (Nov 2009) and living in Ashburton, Mid Canterbury. Before 1824,when Christianty came to our shores, Our ancestors has never seen or heard what a camera looked like.So they paint, (Tapa) they carved, they weaved and they Tipatipa (Tattoo) etc, in such pattern that each clan could understand it's meaning. They speak in my mother tongues language and proud to speak it today. As they have done back then, so I am bringing it to us today, to share their skill, knowledge, wisdom and the passion of my culture and language. My works are based on Family Portrait without Pictures but with Pattern.How does it work? If there are some painting that interest you, email me and I will explain how does it work. Every home has got some way of having pictures in them, of some kind. Why not have your own Family portrait in your own home in pattern !
