Support teachers and staff at UT!

The University is calling for huge budget cuts to undergraduate and graduate education, even though the UT budget is stable. These cuts are about to be implemented without any public input and with no accountability to the university community or the people of the State of Texas.

Small class sizes, low student-teacher ratios, access to classes, staff support, and a diverse curriculum are crucial to provide quality higher education. The lecturers, graduate assistants, and staff at UT-Austin are an invaluable asset to the University and the entire student body.

We, the UT-Austin community, call on the President and Board of Regents to maintain quality undergraduate education and stop the layoffs and budget cuts to the teaching missions of UT Colleges.

We invite all students, staff members and faculty who share these views to sign this petition. Please ask your Italian instructor before or after class about signing it, or about receiving a copy that you can circulate for signatures.

Grazie!

STOP THE CUTS TO UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AT U.T.

UT is proposing to drastically cut and lay off teachers and support staff at UT-Austin, increase class sizes and reduce the number of course offerings on basic undergraduate education.

• All colleges are being asked to lay off undergraduate teaching staff.

• The College of Liberal Arts is being asked to lay off 20-33% of lecturers, assistant instructors, and teaching assistants, 78 to 300 people total.

• The College of Natural Sciences is being asked to lay off 10% of their lecturers, teaching assistants, and research assistants.

• 40 support staff employees from Information Technology and the College of Engineering were laid off in September 2009.

• 16 support staff employees from the McCombs School of Business were laid off in October 2009.

• Non-tenured instructors and support staff are key to quality undergraduate education.

• The UT budget is not experiencing a deficit. Why such drastic cuts?

AS A STUDENT, WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?

1. Talk to your parents (especially if they live in Texas!)

2. Call the UT President and the UT Board of Regents

UT President William Powers, 512-471-1232

The UT Board of Regents, 512-499-4402

Tell them:

As a concerned student/parent of a student at UT-Austin, I ask that you reconsider shifting UT's priorities away from quality undergraduate education. Please stop the layoffs and budget cuts that will harm the quality of undergraduate education at UT-Austin.

3. You and your parents need to call your Texas State Representative and Texas State Senator from your home district in Texas.

To find your Texas State Representative and Texas State Senator, go to

www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us

Tell them:

As a concerned constituent in your district, I ask that you take action to increase funding to UT-Austin, our state's flagship university, to preserve quality and affordable undergraduate and graduate education for all Texans.

4. Talk to your friends about the budget cuts and layoffs, and ask them to talk to their parents and call the UT President, the Board of Regents, and their legislators.

5. Get signatures on the "Stop the Cuts!" Petition. E-mail

organizeut@cwa-tseu.org

for copies of the petition.

Students concerned about the quality of undergraduate education at the University of Texas at Austin and about the priorities of the University in light of recent developments concerning the institution's budget, should read Professor Tom Palaima's piece in the Daily Texan of Wednesday 30 September.
