UWC Volunteers

The following positions are filled on a 'approved volunteer' basis.  currently the positions are as follows;

Seeing as this club can only properly operate with a body of active members to support it, the following volunteer positions are being created;

UWC River Access Issue Coordinator (Czar)-  Brett Allen  brett.j.allen@L-3com.com

This position was created to combine and solidify the UWC's representation and efforts to combat legislation that would be harmful to our wants and needs.  Calls for action and updates will be posted on Eddy Flower, in the UWC River Access Coordination Thread.  Big thanks to Brett for already being very involved in the fight and for accepting the position.

Beginner Series Coordinator/Instructor- (CURRENTLY UNFILLED)

Organize and manage the Beginner Series and manage the instructor schedule for the pool sessions and river trips. Instructors will be, in the future, certified at UWC expense with a letter of agreement signed by both parties. The potential instructor would agree to an active instructor role in the pool and on the river trips with the students. This would be win/win for both the UWC and the person wanting to become an instructor. We envision a one year/one series commitment for the club to cover the certification costs. Eventually, we would like to see the head coordinator certified in Swift Water Rescue, so that those courses could be taught in-house instead of contracting with a non-club instructor. The issue of current for-profit instructors in the area being utilized for the beginner series brought forth the thought that their time would not be able to be properly compensated for, per hour, and eventually it would be cheaper for the club to build a base of its own instructors. For-profit instructors who are UWC members will be on a referral list for those beginners needing additional one-on-one instruction beyond the time limits of the scheduled course.

Instructor- Brent Bisgrove bbisgrove@comcast.net

Instructor-Lonny Selin llselin@msn.com

Youth Activities Coordinator- (CURRENTLY UNFILLED)

We are, as most are, of the thought that getting younger people interested and involved in the sport will help build a bigger base of Utah kayakers in the future. The Youth Activities Coordinator would be a current young paddler with the willingness and ability to reach out to the youth in Utah through Club hosted school presentations and Intro to Boating classes. A role model for other youth to look up to and attempt to emulate is very important. We see this as possibly being a position shared by more than one young paddler, if the interest is there.

Trip/Run Coordinator- (After the trip schedule is compiled, we will list the runs that we require coordinators for)

We thought of situations where certain individuals had extensive knowledge of runs that the club would want to do in the future and thought of event-specific positions that were for a single trip. That person would provide an overview of what to expect, beyond what the guidebooks say and would help lead the club through the run as safely as possible. They would liaison with the club staff and would fill that gap beyond having the club set up camping and permit issues.

UWC Vertical Challenge Coordinator- Jeff Young  Ducatismurf@hotmail.com

We would like to see a team(s) form, carrying the UWC battle flag, to represent the club and this State. Besides being a ton of fun, it’s a great cause. Fundraising for this cause is key, not just paddling. Having someone willing and able to lead the charge for this cause, from the UWC, would represent our club very well.

Kayak Polo Coordinator- Mark Bokish  MarkBokish@hotmail.com

Organizing statewide competitions, and simply getting people paddling in the winter would be, we envision, a good position to have.  Use it has a positve and active way to stay in shape and keep in touch with the friends you normally only see on the water.

Northern Utah Paddle Event Coordinator- (CURRENTLY UNFILLED)

Someone, north of Bountiful, who is very active in the paddle sports, who would coordinate with the club for assistance and participation in special events. Swap meets, Paddle fests, River races, River clean-ups, Wood Removal, etc.

Central Utah Paddle Event Coordinator- (CURRENTLY UNFILLED)

Someone, South of Bountiful and North of Provo, who is very active in the paddle sports, who would coordinate with the club for assistance and participation in special events. Swap meets, Paddle fests, River races, River clean-ups, Wood Removal, etc.

Southern Utah Paddle Event Coordinator- Dan Merrill   4cylindersoffury@comcast.net

Someone, South of SLC, who is very active in the paddle sports, who would coordinate with the club for assistance and participation in special events. Swap meets, Paddle fests, River races, River clean-ups, Wood Removal, etc.

Note about Coordinators- Imagine bringing all of the organized paddling activities in Utah under the umbrella of the UWC and providing club support and participation to each. We did, and we liked that a lot. They would also be able to be a liason for boaters from other areas attempting to connect with local paddlers in a different area of Utah.
