Yager believes we should portray teachers:

"… less as technicians and more as intellectual, reflective practitioners. Teachers are viewed less as consumers and more as providers of knowledge concerning teaching. Teachers are portrayed less as followers and more as leaders. They are seen less as persons housed in a classroom and more as a member of a professional community. The teacher is not seen as ‘the target’ for change, but as a source and facilitator of change."

"The trouble is that my definition . . . of being well-educated is closer to driving than it is to learning the kinds of knowledge that the tests you describe measure . . . It's hard work, but my goal is precisely to stop students from asking "WILL IT BE ON THE TEST"!  . . . Twelve years of such bad habits are not good for most of us in real life."     Deborah Meier
