I was in Weapons Department late 1968 til 1971. During that time the ship moved from Charlseston to Key West and I was on the handling crew. It would be good to hear from fellow shipmates.

Served in Gilmore 10/1962 to 03/1965 in steam torpedo shop, under after mess decks. Quite an experience for a young Seaman Deuce. Met some interesting (and weird) people aboard Gilmore and as years pass only readily remember the good times. Times like being on restriction, in the Marine Brig ashore, away from home at Xmas, no money and all that goes with being in the service at that time I have to work a bit for recall. It was a good experience and don't regret the time.

The only question I have is "WHERE IS DIRTY DEBBIE?"

Enjoyed reading about the various cruises. If you were stationed on the Gilmore 1946/47 you might remember a civilian sightseeing boat in the harbor. When I wasn't in school I signed on as 1st mate. I was trying to learn semphore and would practice my limited knowledge with sailors on the bridge.

Guess I wasn't making sense because they kept changing flagmen. At that time our sightseeing boat was the only boat allowed in a Navy harbor which I always considered a great honor. Years later when our daughter was in the Navy and stationed in Naples she had the opportunity to visit the Gilmore.

Just thought there might be someone out there that was wondering why a civilian boat was in the harbor.

Wow!!! I was searching for an old shipmate from the Gilmore and... Haven't found him (Andy Bellofatto) yet but I did see several familiar names from the 1975-1976 timeframe.

I was in ADP (S-6 Division) and worked with the likes of Tom Marshall, Vic Freeman, Andy Bellofatto, DPC Wilson (Tom I think), Mike Samsoni, Gary Farrar, and too many other great folks to remember.

Reading through the Ships Log has certainly brought back some great memories.

My name is Courtney Barnes and my father, Russell Bryant, was on the Gilmore from I think about 77 until she was decommissioned in 80. He has some great stories about LaMad and his buddies.

He claims that he was the ships arm wrestling champ. LOL. Not sure if I believe that or not, but it makes for a good story.

Just wanted to stop in and say hi. I love hearing all his stories.

I served on Gilmore December 1968 to August 1, 1970. Good memories and a few not really great memories, but now, in retrospect I am glad I was there. I was in X-Division working in the Personnel Office for a while prior to moving into the Chaplain's Office.

Yesterday, June 15, 2008, my wife and I toured the USS Midway in San Diego. It brought back a lot of memories as we climbed up and down the ladders. One of the first things I said as we entered the hangar deck, I commented that the smell was very familiar (oil and paint, I think). Olfactory memories are very vivid to me.

The Berthing compartment with the lockers in the bunks were the same as ours were, however they only stacked them three high... I slept on the fourth one at the top of the stack. Those aircraft carrier guys had all the breaks. :-)

To all of you guys with whom I served, or just to anyone who served, Thank you for your service. I know that in the late 60s it wasn't fashionable to be in the military, thanks for doing it anyway.

I was on the Gilmore from Dec of 68 to Nov 70 in the deck div. when I came on I was seaman and I was a BM3 when I got out. My chief was master chief Jeffcoat the Captain at the time was Van Lunen I believe. The ship went to San Juan, Baltimore, and Gitmo Cuba the rest of the time it was a floating hotel in Charleston SC. and Key West FL.

I am a veteran of the USN and proud to have served with Captain George L. Street III in the sixtys at his last command. Commander Gilmore was well known to us upon initial enlistment into the Navy and service in San Diego. HIs legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of every submariner that has been and those to come. Great site and may they all rest in peace.

Hi! My ex-husband, Mark Pawlowski (he was called "Ski" and he was a Radioman) and I finally hooked up with the Gimore in Pascagoula, MS. We actually went to Key West, but when we arrived they told us that the Gilmore had headed to Pascougla. :) Anyway, I was the 5th American wife to arrive in La Maddalena, about 2 weeks ahead of the Gilmore. I remember you guys working 12on-12 off and the wives going on boats to "The Rock" to go shopping at the small commissary on board the Gilmore. When I first arrived, I got us a place in Palau, then a few months later I got us a place in The Flathouse in La Maddalena.

Does anyone remember a guy named Nowicki and his wife, who was a Phillipino and she was killed on a motorcycle? So many memories and what a neat place to be. I would love to hear from anyone who was there during 2/73 to 2/74.

I servered on the Gilmore from September of 1975-early 1977. I worked as a ship serviceman. First i worked in the gidunk then the laundry. I remember the commissary buring to the ground and also remember the two times that cars were set on fire.I remenber going to Malaga, Palma, France, Rota and Barcelona. I also remember the Big Club and the Pirates cove. Hung out with Stacy, Clark, Carlosand a few other had apartments in Palau and La Madelena which I shared with some other sailors. Had some great times there and some good memories many crazy times when we were on R/R.

Josh served on the Gilmore from 1948-49. He is deceased. I am his cousin. I did not know him since he was gone before I was very old. I have written a short biography about him based on information from the McCain book about the USS Gunnel and information from his widow. I had the great Honor to serive on board the HOWARD W. GILMORE (AS-16)when she was berthed in Charlaston S.C. from 1965 to 1967. My rank was YN2 and I worked for the Admin Lt. in the Captians Office. The CO at that time was Capt., James Clark, one heck of a Officer. I recall being part of the "Springboard" exersices playing Duck for the Subs topedoes. That is a weard feeling seeing a topedoe coming right at you. Of course they wend below the ship. I was glad the wepons officer set the depth correctly!

Well, this was a great find, I was sad to see that the Gilmore was scraped, and sold for it's iron and steel. I guess guys like me will always remember the great times I had on board.

Well, I don't know if anyone will remember me, but I was on the Gilmore 1076-1978. I was there and fought the commissary fire, the oil lean-up and the secnav visit. Was trying to find out how some of the guys weren't doing? If anyone can tell me if they know the wereabout of Chris King from Deck Division.

I was a SA and the Gilmore was my first duty station. I remember Steve Blount, Chris King , Murphy, Honeycutt, and Terry Lord. Almost anyone remember the night someone throw all the Chief's Hats overboard I do. We were sitting there fishing for squid and watching the BMC run over them with a boat while he was trying to pick them out of the water.

Hope to hear from some of the guys. Oh I got out of the Navy in 1992 as a BMC and I am currently in the Army. Been to Iraq twice and I am getting ready to retire on 6 Jun 08, 32 yrs serving. Bye all

Lagging Locker 57-A; R-1 Div. 11/74---11/75

Had Thanksgiving twice, good food back then. Stil looking for R-1 guys and the like from my time aboard. This has helped bring a few of us together! (it is worth your effort to continue this site, I, for one, am grateful)

I remember the Navy's 200 b-day party, what a blast! I am sorry I didn't make the ships company photo...I had pier sentry watch...somebody ALWAYS has duty!

The Gilmore was an experience that grows as I have over the years...the older I get the better my time was, oh we fussed alot back then, counted days, kept "short-timers" calendars etc. but I not known the brotherhood like it was on AS-16.

I am re-learning Italian today to help bring some of the memories. I spent many sundays on the pier in La Madd with the old local fishermen. We talked alot about before the war and my "back home" in St. Louis. They all know of here as the Gateway Arch is a very identifyable landmark to them. It took me 6 mos. to pick up the local dialect, once I did they accepted me on equal terms and we looked forward to getting together after church. (speaking their language was a sign og respect and earned much in return) They would bring a "refillable" gallon jug of homemade rose' wine, ( some of the dryest I've tasted todate) a little salami n' cheese and an empty bucket with a sqidd gig, open wine, fill bucket with sea water (we were right on the edge of pier) break bread and start fishin and tellin stories...it was the best!! When the wine was gone and the bucket was full of calimari time to go home!

I hope to get back in touch with more of my shipmates in the future.

We were all blessed with duty aboard the grand ol' lady.

I served aboard the old lady in 66, 67 and that picture in San Juan was when we sailed to Puerto Rico after a little war game near Cuba.

I kept the new database computers working through all the shakes and shudders.

A Navy buddy told me that my ship was probably on the Internet and he (Mike) was right.

I served aboard the Gilmore from April 1962 until Jan 1965. I was a TM3 (kept getting quotaed). My most vivid memory was loading the 10 boats from our squadron and the 10 from the squadron from Norfolk with live fish during the Cuban crisis. Scarey times. Spent many good hours on the old girl. Sad to see her go.

I served on the Gilmore from October 1952 until May 1954 in the "F" Division. I came aboard out of boot camp and departed a FT3. I hold many fond memories of events, places, and especially friends during this period. I did not realize it at the time, but this was one of the most enjoyable and beneficial periods of my life.

WOW!!!!! Finding this site is awesome. I was also a "Burning Bush" sailor who transferred to the Gilmore in 1970 when she returned to Key West to replace the Bushnell, and left in May 1971. I was an ET3 at the time, very young , and very irresponsible, but I pretty much managed to stay out of serious trouble while oon the Gilmore.I was in shop 67 A I think , in R-4 Div. I usually remember people when I see there names, but I especially remember ET3 Davis Matteson, my drinking buddy, and ET1 Storch, who became a mentor on a subsequent tour at NAS Key West. I retired in 1990 as ETC (SW). Would love to hear from anyone who might remember me. Thanks for a wonderful sight which incited so many wonderful memories for me.

Great site, Eldon. I have been reading the letters for some time and finally decided to get on board. Got on board the Gilmore mid 1949 and stayed on her til November 1952. Spent the whole tour in Key West. When I reported for duty as an RMSA I asked the Marine at the gate where the ship was - he replied, "oh, you mean Bldg 16" - I said "no,i"m going on a ship" Marine said we call it Bldg. 16 because we think it's stuck in coffee grounds and can't go anywhere!

Those were good years - one ship or another was always going to Cuba (before Castro) and before we sent around the message saying how many first class spaces and how many enlisted spaces there were available we checked to see if anyone in the radio shack wanted to take a weekend trip.

In those days, our primary communication with the subs was Morse Code and now none of the services even use it!

The Gilmore was communication HQ for Subron 4 and whenever the ship went out to sea (NOT very often!) I moved over to the base with Subron 4.

Discharged out as an RM2 in nov. 52. If anyone from that era is still around I'd be happy to hear from them. Got some pix I'll send later.

I served on the Gilmore from October 1977 through March of 1979. I was the ship's lead journalist and ran the tv (Big G TV) and radio stations. Worked for BMC Weldon, who ran I Div at the time, IC1 Bill Dunlop, ET2 Gary Wilson. Worked with JO3 Monk Messer, JOSN Wayne Blount and SN Danny P'Nut Pearson. Played tackle on the Ship's football team that came in 2nd place to Sigonella in the 1979 COMFAIRMED tournanment in Rota, Spain. God what memories.... 25 cent Old Milwaukee's in the beer hall....Running movie marathon's on a Sat night...and the liberty cruises to Palma De Majorca, Barcelona and Athens...

PM3 Jim Webster '76-'78 in the R-1 Division. Lots of memories aboard this ship. beer hall, bowling, standing watch at 0200, did I say beer hall? Chief Merke was chief in the pattern shop and he was like my dad, a great guy. I made lots of plaque backs, picture frames and ships tables in that shop. Also worked in the foundry then went to Rubber & Plastics school and worked in that shop until I was transfered to the USS Simom Lake AS-33 in Charleston SC until my honorable discharge in may '79. I came aboard the Gilmore sometime in late November of 1968 as SFM3 at Charleston, S.C., and subsequently made SFM2.

We changed home ports to Key West, Florida, in June of 1970.

I enjoyed all my days on the Gilmore, both at Charleston, Key West, and all the cruises we took, E.G., San Juan, Baltimore, and New Orleans ('71 Mardi Gras).

I was separated from navy service on July 19, 1971. I went to work for the Department of the Navy (Naval Research Laboratory and also the Washington Navy Yard in D.C.) and took an early out (retirement) in December of 1995.

I will always cherish the memories of my Gilmore days. I was sorry to see her scrapped but the ole girl will always be etched in my memory.

BTW, I remember Paul Taber from the pipe shop (signed in below but no email address). Drop me an email, Paul, if you read this and get access to email. I passed your entry on to Twig Wiggins, whom I stay in contact with. Also, check my photos in Gilmore album for years '69 and '70. I left my name in the register at the rate I was when I was a crew member of this graceful lady from 1979 - 1980. She was my first ship, straight out of A School. I sailed the Gilmore home on her last voyage from Sardinia to Norfolk for decommissioning. It was on this ship that I made my decision that the Navy would be my career, and so it was, eventually retiring as a Lieutenant Commander some 23 years later. This ship will always have a special place in my heart as my first home at sea, my first Navy family, and the "graceful lady" who made me grow up and realize that being at sea was where I wanted to be. Rest peacefully old girl, job well done.

At that time I was an EM3 in port services (C division).
I used to drive the liberty boats (LCM,s)now and then, and keep them going.
Now I live in oak creek, wi.

My boys are all grown up, and now I spend most of my time with my wife, and my motorcycle.

i came aboard BUILDING 16 in charleston, sc in november of 1965. i was on the deck force until i left for CT school in pensacola, fl in june 1966. i was right out of boot camp and i was still 17yrs. old. spring board cruise to san juan and st. thomas was great. i don't think i've drank rum since. anybody know pete borgueta torpedoman 3rd class?

Was in Medical Department from late 1967 to March 1969. Made a couple Springboard cruises. Enjoyed my time on board. Re-enlisted, and three weeks later had orders to 'Nam. Came back without an external scratch in 1970, and retired from NavHosp, Oakland, Ca., in 1978.

I was a crewmember aboard Gilmore from late '67 to early '69 as member of Medical Dept. Teriffic duty, then I reenlisted, and in short order had orders to MilPhap team N-6 (later re-numbered N-8), for duty in R.V.N. Got shot at (once or twice), no scratches, good and bad memories, but absolutely no wish to go back to 'Nam! Looking for R.D.Warmanen (sp), who worked with me in sick bay records.

Boarded the AS-16 on Jan '70 at Charleston, SC, mostly to stand watch and sleep, because the rest of my time was spent at the Acey-ducey and the strip ! Anyone remembers the hot-dogs for a quarter ? How about the solar eclipse ?? And of course, good chow aboard. Today I very proudly tell my sea stories to my grandchildren, and of so many good shipmates I've never seen again. Hi shipmates, I really was not a shipmate of the Gilmore,but I stood amany morning having a smoke upon the main deck and look across the water and see the Gilmore with a bunch of old desil subs tied up to her,Yes I was standing on the deck of the USS Everglades, at good old Charleston SC. From Oct 66 to July 70. Of course the Gilmore left and went I beleive to Key West sometime in 69,The other day I was setting in Subway at our local Walmart store while my wife spent what little money I have left and this guy set down near by noticing my hat NAVY on it and ask what ship I was on well he was on the Gilmore, there in Charleston, Hi name is William ? he was a 2nd class store keeper S-3 div. maybe one of you guys might know him. It is good to find these sights our Everglades site disapeared sometime back.. Good luck all

I served onboard from November '75 until November '76 in E-div as an EM3. Great memories from the Big club to the Nude beaches to Guido’s for espresso waiting for the launch back to the ship. Scuba diving lessons and driving around the Island in a Mini-Cooper. Beer drinking and hell raisin at Max Fenners house. Fresh bread in the morning in Santa Theresa and oven brick pizzas. Loads of Calamari and tortellini…and most of great friends and shipmates. Wishing you all well.

I picked up HWG in Pascagula Shipyard during refit to prepare for transit to LaMad. Brought my family over in May. We lived on the north end of LaMad in a peasant cottage with an outdoor kitchen, no electricity except a generator for a couple of hours a night. We loved it. We had a straight view of the Straits of Bonifacio and Corsica. My landlord was a French man who sold the land that Navy housing was built on. I left in July 75.

If any of you remember the commissary on the island, I went over there when the CBs were building it. They had steps leading down from the entrance. I told them that women with shopping carts and baby carriages would have to fight their way up and down the steps. Why not build a ramp also, which they did. My main contribution to the island. Do any of you remember when Pistol Pete Maravich visited as part of a USO tour and gave a basketball demonstration in the gym?

I went aboard the Happy Howie right out of A School around Sept. 68 and left Sept.70. Went mess cooking right off the bat. After that went to the pipe shop in R Division. Made the trip from Charleston to Key West. Spent the rest of my four years in Rotten Groton, Cn. Like to read all of the posts on the site.

I served on the Gilmore from 1977 to 1978. I was assigned to 38A. My first job was working on the USS Nautilus, what a treat! Spent alot of time seeing the world from the night club perspective of a 22 year old. Sure wish I could go back and take a different approach, well, maybe not! It was all part of my growing up. I made friends that still fill my memory with fond reflections of those days long past. The Gilmore was a special ship with men of charactor. Some had it and other's were just, "charactors". I treasure the time I spent on the "Rock" and those many days and nights in LaMad and Palau. Fare well, fellow shipmates. May you always have the wind in your face, a bone in your teeth and a silver coin for the Boatman.

Hello! My Grandfather "HAL" Harold John Chesters served on the USS Howard W. Gilmore from April '44 through Dec. 21, '45 during WW2. He was a musician and played guitar among other instruments. His friends nicknamed him "Strings". I am writing something about him to honor his memory and I'm in desperate need of any/all information in regards to what life was like during that time on the ship. Where did the ship go? What type of miliary involvement did it endure during the war? etc. If you served on the ship during that time and you could provide any information, I would be eternally grateful. If you were a musician with my Grandfather or you were friends with him that would unbelievable and I would be honored to talk to you. I served on the Gilmore from October 1977 through March of 1979. I was the ship's lead journalist and ran the tv (Big G TV) and radio stations. Worked for BMC Weldon, who ran I Div at the time, IC1 Bill Dunlop, ET2 Gary Wilson ran the shop. Worked with JO3 Monk Messer, JOSN Wayne Blount and SN Danny P'Nut Pearson. Played tackle on the Ship's football team that came in 2nd place to Sigonella in the 1979 COMFAIRMED tournanment in Rota, Spain. God what memories.... 25 cent Old Milwaukee's in the beer hall....Running movie marathon's on a Sat night...and the liberty cruises to Palma De Majorca, Barcelona and Athens...

The Happy Howie was my first duty station back 1975. I worked in the electric shop and have many fond memories from her. The ROCK, New 4 lane bowling alley, the liberty boats, coffee at Guido's in the morning after drinking too much at the Big Club. Tortellini and Calamari and brick oven pizzas. And lets not forget the NUDE Beaches all over the island. Great times and great shipmates. Served aboard the Gilmore from Nov 1953 (Coming aboard in Boston) when we were in the Yards first Sea experience was shake down cruise in the North Atlantis was sick as a dog till we returned to port that night Left the Gilmore to supposedly retire Feb 1957. A fast talking recruiter talked me into staying in the reserves and I retired for real 36 years later as Command Master Chief in Houston Texas. While on the Gilmore I worked in the Optical shop went from OMSA thru OM2 during my tour on the Gilmore. Was a time of many crusies for a tender from South America to Newfoundland and all over the carribean Havana Cuba, Puerto Rico Gitmo Port o Prince and Virgin Islands. Served on the Gilmore from March, 1956 to August, 1958. Reported aboard as EMFN and left as EM2, served in R-3 (Electrical Repair) division. We were homeported in Key West during my time aboard, with yard overhaul in Hoboken, N.J. in fall of '56, then REFTRA in Gitmo, port visit in Havana, back to Key West. We spent several months in Norfolk replacing the tender there in '57, and again back to Key West. We deployed to St. Thomas, USVI for Springboard '58 for 6 weeks, another week in Havana, and back to Key West. I married a Key West conch in June '58 and we are approaching our 50th anniversary in June. Gilmore was a great ship that served our country well for many years.
