I served on the Gilmore from 1970 untill i got out in 72 I was one
of the "burning bush" sailors that transferred to the Gilmore. I was a
TMT-2 in the after torpedo shop. It broke my heart to see the video of
the Bush being torpedoed. Happy new yr to all

Merry Christmas and happy 08 to all you Gilmore shipmates, I was on
board from july 1959 to Sept 1972 .. Ronald W. Myers and I both reported
aboard as DC1 and were both assigned to the carpenter, Iver L Jones And
another fist class named "KING" were already aboard. CWO3 Gustofson was
division off. soon after reporting aboard,Jones, Myers and I all went up
for chief and were all promoted in july 59. That threw a monkey wrench
into the carpentar shop assignments, Luckily a new program {NAVCAT}
was opening up so we volunteered and were assigned the NAVCAT TEAM,
Jones remained in charge of the carpenter shop, The program, navcat,
became so popular that NAVPERS spred it around the navy. Thanks
to an outstanding CO, XO and Persommel officer and not excluding the
medical officer.
I've said all that,to say this !! Out of all the ships I served on ---
Maury, Vulcan, LST 880, Utina, Betelgeuse, Skagit, Midway
The Gilmore was the best duty of my 25 year career. Not only because
I enjoyed the work, personnel and Charleston, but because it helped
me through to rest of my naval career. I went form Gimore to
DCA on Betelgeuse to Ops off US naval reserve flt, Orange Tx. To
Engineer officer on Skagit to Repair Off on Midway Where I retired
LT. U.S.N. after two cruise to Viet Nam, I would love to hear from my
old Gilmore shipmates, God's favor to you all.

I heard about the web page from a friend of mine that I've stayed
in contact with over the years. We both served aboard the "Gilmore" from
1969-1973. It was good to see some pictures of her. Alaways wondered
what happened to her. Brought back a lot of good memories. Some of the
best people & best times were during my service abaord Gilmore.

My Brother-in-law Hanzel Bonds was on the Gilmore, I think during
the Korean war. I was on The Bushnell from Sept. or Oct. of 1955 until
shore duty in Feb. 1957. I came to the ship from Bainbridge, Md. boot
camp company 318. Those were the days my friends. As the saying goes,
"we thought they would never end". These web sites are great. I visit
the Bushnell site alot. I am surprised that many more ex shipmates from
both ships don't visit these sites. I watch the video of the sinking of
that old ship and get a lump in my throat. I'm sure the crew from the
AS-16 do also. Being just a few days before Christmas let me wish all
of those who read this a great and healthy season.

I reported to the AS 16 Howard W. in March 69 right out of boot camp
(10 Dec 68) , She had just gotten back from Gitmo when the screws came
off and sat on I think it was Pier Papa. I remember the Dunkin Donuts
truck pulling along side on my first Sunday morning on board ... On my
first Quarter Deck watch we had one of many "Black Bag" Drills security
breach's The Chief of watch told me to run down the forward brow take
cover and point my 1911 up the gang way. My dear old dad told me never
to point a unloaded weapon so I put in a clip and chambered a round
. on board 3 weeks and got written up that's when I heard about the
Capt. re-commissioning of the brig...... Sadly I was only on for a few
months then went westpac. I still wonder why the forward mount 52? had
a metal rigging around it sort of like a patio awning . She was a good
ship with a fine crew

Eldon,
Was just reading a "Letters from my Shipmates" by Bob Stothfang to you.
I too was in the R4 division as an ETR-5 and aboard from '63 - '67 but
don't remember you nor Bob. I do remember some guys from the calibration
shop, one who had an amateur radio license and also worked for a radio
station in Charleston, Don't recall his call sign nor the station he
worked for.
My training was on submarine radar. My duty station underway was CIC.
My memory has started failing so can't remember any shipmates.
I do have a pic of a gtoup of us on the helo-deck during a cookout on the
return from Operation Springboard in 1967 which I'll scan and email to
you in the hopes someone will recall the names of the shipmates.
Will you be at the reunion in May?
Sincerely,
Glenn (Rick) Sumrall

I boarded the Gilmore in the month of March in the year 1969. My rank
was FN in the engineering department. I worked out of the carpenters
shop making cruise boxes and walnut plaques for brass ensigneer.
I worked aboard the old WW11 pig boats along with the nuclear subs.
We came out of the yards went on a shake down cruise to gitmo..today you
hear alot about gitmo back then the only people who knew about it were
in the Navy. I really grew up and knew what seasickness was after that
cruise. We were in a storm that lasted forever, or at least it felt that
way. September of 1970 I was transfeered to a floating dry dock in Groton
CT. When we were there we set-up the blocks for the subs to sit on while
the hulls were sand blasted. The Gilmore has always been in my heart.
At that young age I did not realize how important that experiece would
be and how often I would think back to those days.
An older and wiser sailor,
Pasquale Guerrieri

Reported aboard Gilmore right out of Torpedoman "A" School, just in time
for the Cuban Missle Crisis in October 1962, a bit scary. Also aboard
when JFK had the bad luck to go to Dallas. Served in Gilmore until March
1965 when separated from active duty. Served officially as a Torpedoman
in the steam shop, below the after mess decks. In reality I spent a
lot of time (9 months) as a mess cook, 3 months as compartment cleaner
and 3 months as "Captain of the Head". On occasion I did see a torpedo.
That was two lifetimes ago and the longer I am away from the Navy, more
fond are the memories. It was a good experience for a young guy, learned
some hard life lessons, such as Don't give a TMC instructions as how to
have self gratification. That stunt got me, deservedly, three days in the
Marine Brig on bread & water. A good lesson learned. Would be glad to
hear from anyone who served same time as myself. Where is Dirty Debbie?

I went aboard the Gilmore fresh from boot camp,(after two week
leave)in Sept.of 1961. She was in the yards at Charleston at the time.I
served on board from Sept. of 1961 until August of 1965, most of that
time spent in AER, (aft engine room). Upon my discharge in August of 61,
she was once again in the yards, this time at Portsmouth, Va. Those years
on board the Gilmore were some of the best years and most memorable
of my life. I am proud to be a part of her heritage.

Italy 1975/76. I remember working with Roy Rimmele, Greg Convey,
Mike Piotroski, Pat Hatcher, TMCM Sala, CWO Holt and Commander Tow.
Many others as well, but unfortunately names come to and leave me over

I really enjoyed my tour of duty aboard the USS Howard W. Gilmore
and learned a lot while stationed aboard the majestic old lady.
Sardinia was a great place for a young man in his prime of life to be

Hi,
I was an electrician for Ingalls in Pascagoula when the Gilmore was there
for her final overhaul in '72 before leaving for the Med. I remember
pulling equipment off that was dated 1939 and before, most of the wiring
was still fabric-wrapped, and asbestos was EVERYWHERE!!!! The bow rose
3-4 feet when they removed the forward gun turret and, all in all, it
was an experience of a lifetime to work on a ship that fought in the
last really big brawl. I had left the Air Force about a year before,
went to college for a while, and got married. About 3 months later I
reenlistd in the AF and continued my career, retiring as a MSgt (E-7) in
'93. Coincidently, I arrived in Sardinia for duty at Mt Limbara in Jan of
'81, not too long after the Gilmore left. (I think) We always thought it
was "amusing" the procedure you guys had to go through to make a "Momma
Call" back to the states using the Commodores stateside access line.
What you probably didn't know was that we were using the line too to
make our calls. We would patch our site phone over to you, grab the
"good" line, and talk away. We would patch a speaker in so we could
hear if a call was being made and pull our patch so your call could go
through--that's why sometimes you had to dial twice, we weren't quick
enough on pulling the patches. We had a 12 channel system shooting to
you on a 24" dish and were giving you voice, data, and AFN channels,
with AFN simo'd on two channels so the voice bandwidth would be somewhat
reasonable. It didn't work too well--not enough BW, but it was the best
we could do with what we were being given to send to you. Both times
I was at Limbara the Orion was our commissary supply for the site,
our cook used to go once a month and draw for the chow hall on site.
Being a remote, isolated, unaccompanied site, we were issued the same
food the submarines got...and we really enjoyed it. We almost lost him
once when he was transferring goods at the pier and fell down between the
landing craft and the pier--he got banged up a bit but nothing got broke,
but he was REALLY sore for a few days!! Occasionally we would arrange
volleyball matches between us and some of the navy people at La Mad,
we would pack a bunch of guys in the site ambulance and drive down to
take the ferry over--unless it was summertime. More than once we got
stranded with our vehicle at La Mad when the ferry crews decided to go
on strike for the afternoon because it was too nice a day to work! This
is a good site and I hope everyone is able to meet up with the people
they're looking for. Just thought you might like a perspective from
the other service in the area...

I came aboard the Howie as a Shipserviceman First Class and worked in
the Shipstore office. We went to Gitmo, New Orleans, Haiti, Pasagoula,
then on to the rock. I worked for Master Chief Ertsberger, then Senior
Chief Smith, then I made Chief and assumed responsibilities as chief of
the S-3 gang. I reported aboard in 1972. After all these years in the
Navy, I try and remember some of the fine sailors that I worked with and
then they worked for me. Its hard at time, some names just come back,
like Dave Satterfield SH2, J. Johnson SH1, SH3 Beattie, Frank Rivera
and Jenkins SH1. Any shipservicement that served with me during that
time send me an e-mail. A great ship and great crew.
By the way, the anchors lost in Haiti, were due to dropping the hook from
the housing verse lowering it to the waterline as required. That was the
story around the mess.

I was on the Gilmore from 1976-79, i don't remember much cause i was
always drunk, i was in 1st div deck, i also operated the paravane cranes
during verticle replentishment, do any of you remember those non-dtop
helicopters and loading the ships stores? that was a zoo. i remember
when the uss tatenall came along side we had to throw a heaving ball
to them to get their mooring line, nobody could reach the destroyer we
were just not reaching, so BM1 winkler gets a gun firing heaving ball and
proclaims to all the deckapes "let me show you how a real sailor does it"
fires the ball and it sails clean over the ships bow and into the Med,
someone forgot to tie the mooring line off on the other end!
The first day i had arrived the gilmore was at sea, the italian
guards were walking around with ak-47's and police dogs, this was like
2am or 0200 hours, i said to myself"where the hell am i?" the first
day i got onboard, i had everything stolen out of my locker, i mean
everything, and i knew who did it but couldn't prove it, so i made life
hell for anyone who got on my case, i was ristricted to the ship 95% of
my stay on board. Hung around with all the troublemakers. I was 18 then,
i'm 50 now some of the guys who i remember were Rex Recard of deck 2 div,
bm2 bill jones, BM1 Hunter, whom i got a photo of him sacked out in the
bosn'hole,Joe Milbauer of ships stores, he had a starfish tatooed on the
top of his hand, he was from Pilly, Sn Dave Bell,Jim barnnet used to play
his electric guitar over by the ships store,BMC stadler, we called him
mr spacely of spacely sprockets on the jetsons, he looked just like him,
dave mosher he was this dude who was looking for an excuse to get out of
the navy, i heard that he had found one,SA Dagnall of deck 2 div, MAA-2
Bolanger, he looked like wolfman jack, and just about 20 or so faces
i con't put names too, oh yeah EN Gary Roberts, SA lemasters , he was
this 5ft 2in tall stocky guy from kentucky that you could smell a mile
away when he got out of work, SN Knight, FA Malpass to name a few.
Do any of you remember that huge mountain in la madd? the one
that looked like there was a castle along its length opposite of ladd,
well me joe milbauwer, bob hosteddler, rex recard, and two other guys
walked about 4 miles to the base of that mountain and found a trail and
climbed it to the top, the straight wall that could been seen from the
sip was part of a larger section of ruins, the place was honeycombed
with tunnels, so we thought that maybe it could have been at one time a
monestary, we sat up there for three hours smoking hashish, and drinking
vanatcha wine, we could see the gilmore moored down below, it was so
small it looked like you can throw a stone at it and sink it! Well i
hated that place and was glad to get out of there, i was transferred to
groton subbase for the remainder of my time in the navy, i was assigned
to surface craft div, lower sub base, i made all boat coxswain, got to
go home on weekends cause i was only 50miles away, i straightened myself
out there and made it to QM-3, two weeks after recieving my crow, i got
honorably discharged to uss front porch, and for the last 35 or so years,
i keep telling myself how much i'd love to go back to La Madd and see
how it has changed, those days were the best days of my life and they
will never come again.

Hello to all my shipmates and the sailors alike that served aboard
the "GILMORE". I boarded the Gilmore shortly after 3a.m. in July 1974
with 11 other sailors. I knew immediately after that wild crazy ride
from the Olbia airport to the fleet landing by Guido's bar, that duty
aboard the Gilmore is going to be a blast. The van skids to a halt and
the driver (a local) runs around the van to open the sliding door and
nearly drags us out of the van as he yells the same sentence over and
over as he screeches and swerves through town. We were left alone on the
waterfront laughing and talking about the wild ride from Olbia. An hour
later the Mike8 boat picked us up and took us to our new home. Two days
later on Monday morning, I was assigned to the DC work shop below the
machine shop port side. As a member of the DC division, I became very
attached to the Gilmore. In port or underway inspections and/or repairs
would typically involve going way down below decks to spaces nobody has
ever seen or been for many years. Shaft alley and the hole where the
anchor chains are stowed were the spookiest. The thought and pictures
of her being towed down the river for dismantling makes me sad with an
empty feeling within.
I made the best of the situation at San Stefano. I don't know what
type of duty they're doing now over there in La Maddallena, but while I
was aboard her from 7/74 to 1/76, it was billeted as isolated duty. And
it was definetely isolated duty with a new beer hall and missle re-work
bldg. on the west side of the base. A year later the Sea Bees built the
3 lane bowling alley. That was it!! Now--- on-line photos and web page
shows a pretty good size Naval base on the island and at La Madd. We're
talking Disneyland.During my time aboard the Gilmore and later while
stationed at Coronado,CA., old Howie was then and always has been the
only ocean going Tender in the Navy. During my 18 months aboard, we made
cruises to Ville France (twice),Rota Spain, Malaga Spain, Mallorca Spain
(twice),and Tunis Tunisia.
Those were some of the best memories of my life. I miss those good
times. I miss my shipmates. Hope I didn't bore you too much. Been over 15
years or better that I've had such an oppurtunity to gather my memories
and feelings and share them with old freinds and shipmates who been there,
done that! Thanks,
Bob Vineyard

Another annual sign-in from a former Radioman aboard the Happy
Howard. Arrived from Radioman "A" School in March of 1958 and left in
May 1959 and ended up doing a tour with the International Ice Patrol
in Argentia Newfoundland then joined the USS Forrestal for a nine-month
Med cruise.
Would like to find some former radiomen, especially Bill Perry,
"Obie", Carlos Aviles, Bob Mays.
Have a great 2007!

I served on the Gilmore from Dec. 1953-Aug.1954. Boarded in Boston
while the ship was being serviced, and left for Key West, arriving just
before Xmas 1953.
We were tied up to the pier in Key West, Fl for 7 months, except for
a one month cruise to Cuba, Gonaives, Haiti, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and
San Juan, Puerto Rico. I was discharged on Aug. 15th 1954, and returned
home to Michigan. I left service as a YN3, just before my eligibility
for my YN2 rating. This many years later, I can't remember hardly any
names from the ships complement of 1,053 crewmembers.

Hey,
I served on The USS H.W. Gilmore (AS16) from Dec 1978 to Sept 1980. Would
love to find old friends to reminisce about our escapades in that
beautiful paradise called the ROCK. I worked as Boat crew for small boats
then as the Captains Gig coxswain. I later became an IC-man. Darn, what
great memories I have of La Maddalena, Santo Estafano, and Palau.
Please feel free to contact me.

Hi. I am the youngest daughter of Cdr. Gordon R. Voegelein. My father
was the XO on the Gilmore many, many years ago. My dad passed away a year
ago in August and I would love to hear from anyone who served with him.
It would be an honor to share any memories or thoughts with my mom who
misses him dearly.
Thank you so much,
From a daughter who misses him so much too!

Hi Eldon ,this is a great site. I Was sent to the Howard W. Gilmore
in May of 1958 after completing engineman school in Great Lakes. I was
awaiting sub school which was booked up. I was assigned to the repair
div. which was located under the machine shop, you got there through
a deck hatch.I served in Key West but went with her to St.Thomas for
30 days. I remember them making the movie Pink Peticoat on the pier
in front of the HWG. Tony Curtis was in the movie. They actually painted a
submarine pink for the movie but I forget which one. Had some good times
aboard and in Key West where I had a motorcycle, we parked the bikes in
a garage behind the Casa Marina hotel. a lot of fun was had there . I
have a lot more to tell but don't want to clog up your site ,lol. Capt.
Michaels was our captain , and if I remember right Chief Yaeger was in
charge of my shop. Hope to hear from any guys who served with me.
I went with the ship up to the yards in Norfolk Va. also.
sincerely
Ted Rauert

Many thanks to Eldon for maintaining this site.
It's time for the once-a-year Ships Log book signing. I was on the
Gilmore in '77 and '78, working in the foundry and (also) for LT. Kemp
in P&E. Except for the interminable droning of needle guns (during the
Naples yard period), the Gilmore was a great first duty station.
My free-time was mostly spent weight-lifting and swimming ridiculous
distances so it's not too likely that very many people remember me;
however, I've enjoyed hearing from a few ex-shipmates and would like to
hear from others, as well.

1948-1952. Signed the 2006 Ships Log book for my dad and he'd like
for me to sign this years book also! At one time he may have been the
youngest crewman on board. He spent a lot of time doing 'side cleaning'
(which he loved)! Alot of great memories of Keywest. Mentioned James
Forrest Gardner, Chief Hunt, Wells, William Lloyd Thomas, Bruce Davis,
Pappy Shields, 4th division. Would love to hear from anyone who was on
the ship during these years. Has lots of pictures with names that he's
going to try and post.

I served aboard the Gilmore from October 1952 to May 1954. We were
in Key West most of the time. I entered the "F" Division as a Seaman
Apprentice out of boot camp and left as a FT3. I have fond memories of
the Gilmore, my shipmates, and Key West. In retrospect, this was one
of the most beneficial and pleasant periods of my life. I wish I had
realized it at that time.

I was an EN-3 when I came on board in April 1968 and left the Gilmore
and the navy on Aug 13 1970 in Key West as an EN-2. I worked in the
auxillary gang and the O2 plant. I had the privledge to work with the
late David Payne MM1, a finer man I never met, spent several watches in
the O2 plant with him.
Does anyone know of the where abouts of a Charles (Chuck) H Bunting,
EN-3. He left the Gilmore in 69 and went on to the USS Boston. Please
forward my address to him if you know where he is or write me if you
have any info.

I served on the Gilmore 69-70. Worked in the aft engine room,
cleaning the head, and did my mess cook stint. I put in a chit for three
more months of mess duty and was in charge of thirty mess cooks. What
a slack job that was, one day on duty, one day off. We used to say that
the Navy was just like the boy scouts, except the boy scouts has adult
leadership. Anyway, after all thease years, I can proudly look back at
my time spent on the "Gilly." This is my second signing.
