I served aboard the USS Trumpetfish in 1968 and did a very short TD
on the USS Darter in 1967. Both boats were attached to Subron 4 and the
USS
Howard "Pappy" Gilmore was the vessel that helped to keep us submerged
and at times "afloat".

A Navy man's first assigned ship is sacred, kind of like a first love.
Out of the six ships I was assigned to during my career, the Gilmore is very special to me.
fresh out of Instrumentman 'A' school in 1972, and after a long strange flight to the south, I found myself
carrying a heavy seabag and my guitar through the loud noise of Ingals shipyard
in Pascagoula, Ms. I finally reached my first 'Navy Home", AS-16. I was
scared as hell but I mustered up the courage to report on board. I was
treated to the likes of fine shipmates like Jim Forsythe, (OM1 at the time)
IMC Spates, (ran a pawn shop out of th Watch and Clock repair shop),
MM3 Ron Mathews, and many others. After Ingalls we returned to the Paradise of
Key West. Then on to LaMaddalena. I have many pictures of AS-16, including
the one just after we lost our Starboard anchor in Haiti. (It was used as
a station break on Big-G-TV ,later on) Some buddies and I
formed a rock band while in LaMaddalena. Probably the first American Band to tour
clubs in Sardinia. (yes I have pictures)
We had equipment donated from the sixth fleet band.
I even have live recordings from the "new" beer hall at the end of the pier!
I saw Jim Forsythe's letter in here, but I did not see an email address.
Jim, If youy read this, please drop me a line. I pray that you are ok.
I left the Silly Gilly on April Fools Day, 1974, and many more Navy adventures
waited for me, but I have always treasured the times spent on AS-16 the most.
When you enter my home, immediatly inside the entry is all of my navy
Memorabilia, the FIRST ship's plaque that you will see, is just like the one pictured on this
site. It is one of my most prized posessions. I am turning 46 soon,
and have been retired for almost seven years. Old, grey and bald!
But I hold a special place in this old seafarer's heart for the Gilmore
and my shipmates! Please write!

First ship I served on, in 1971, when she was in Key West, Florida.
It was a fantastic time for me. I was a young MM3 waiting to go to
Nuclear Power School at Bainbridge, Maryland. I used to pray
before we "Lit Off" the "Donkey Boilers" in the Fire Room. They were
already bowed out a little, and looked like they would POP!
Loved Key West - Lived in an old funeral home (DEFINETLY HAUNTED!!!!!!!!!), and I went snorkling every day after work.

The Howard W. Gilmore was the first ship I served aboard in my career ( January 1979 to it's
decommissioning ceremony in September 1980). A few weeks after I checked aboard her, we deployed
as part of the JFK Battle Group and were one of the first ships to visit Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia
since World War II.

I served on the Gilmore from 1954 to 1958. I made IC First Class in three
years and served in both the electrical gang an in the IC Gyro Shop. I thought
I was signed on earlier but could not find my registration. I really enjoyed those years.
There were a lot of good people on the ship at the time. Papa Taylor, Mike Riccio,
Bert Parasella. I remember the day I was to leave the ship in 1958 and was on the
gangway with discharge papers in hand and the marines landed in Libya. I did another
30 days and missed the first day at college at Bradley University. I have heard from a
few individuals but would like to here from more. I bet most of us are now retired and
enjoying the good years. Regards Chuck Hansen cdhansen@gte.net

I served on the Gilmore from may of 70 (in Charlston, just before moving to Key West) till
May of 71 when I mustered out. I worked in the R4 division as an electronics tech, the division
commander was "Huston" a WO1, I remember Robbie Robertson, Dennis Raab, Massimgill (the tv expert).
I have great memories of that time and never cease to be amazed at how when I was there I could not
wait to get out of the Navy and get home, and now, almost 30 years later I miss those times when
life was so simple and I enjoyed myself so much on $68 every two weeks!! I am still in touch with
Doug Mansur who was in the rewind shop and remember and miss many people, Atkinson from Corpus
Christi, Jerry Gosda, Chickenman, Gary Burkhart (head), Pacheco from the optical shop, a guy named
Mattson from Waco Texas, and many more.

Can the pictures dated from 1972 actaully be from 1973? I met the ship in Key west
in early 1973, if I remember correctly. When we arived at La Madda. The XO said if you go
liberty don't all go to one island, they might not have the room for us all in one place
(side note). As I recall the Beer hall wasn't completed or any other building. The Italian
guards had machine guns and patroled the Island. I may be mistaken, I'll have to look at my
orders for the dates. We releived the Fulton from there as I recall.

I was on the Gilmore in Italy from Nov.73 to May 74 and worked in the pattern shop
for Chief Tribbling (spelling?). What an experience, a liberity boat hit a rock and
sank, the beer hall was built, the riot at La Mad after a fight between shipmates
and locals at the disco. Calling away the divers to go and save 200 or so shipmates
holding the landing from locals and the Italian cops after the fight. Some of my
memories are bit fuzzy but I can remember a few very well. Does any one remember the
night coming back from Paulma, Spain during darken ship and there was an explosion, or
very firey discharge that scared the bridge half to death? It came from the foundry and
was a long tube made from empty peanut cans taped together with a hole in the bottom for
lighter fluid, the shell was a coke can with tape around it to fit snug. When fired a
flame shot 30-40 feet off the port side o-1 deck that brought out the xo and every
master-at-arms on the ship looking for who done it. The tube and other evidence now
rests on the bottom of the med. If any one remembers any of these great times including
when I was blue ball by the animal locker drop me a line, espicially Manasco, Mountjoy,
Elston and any one I missed.

I spent a year in Sardinia as acting Master Diver 73-74.Anyone remember our
raven named Cliff that was the hood ornament on the diving boat? He sure got
everyones attention when we pulled alongside and his wings were spread.
Nice site. Hated to see the ship in that shape but they all get that way.
I went to Mare Island INACTSHIPS and saw a lot of them looking like that.
I left the Navy in late 76. Now leaving the state employ next summer.

I was in the diving locker. Our biggest job, as I recall, was "salvaging" coffee cups
from the bottom and feeding our pet octopus that Randy Everett found. The coffee cups
were traded for food from the galley. Upon my return to the states in 1974, I was

Thanks for the photos and allowing me to wander down memory lane.
How did he get the aerial views at San Stephano? I don't remember any
planes flying over and it was very rare for us to have two subs to port
and one to starboard while I was on board. I can guarantee this since
R-7 hooked up the coolant overflow systems for any "nuke" moored
alongside.

After signing the guest book the first time, I then started looking at the pictures.
She looked so sad at the end. Looking at the shot of the bridge, I remember one day after
dry dock in '69 we made a "speed run" and the Captain (his name escapes me but he flew the
Yogi Bear flag when we returned home) was getting a good laugh as he looked at the speed
indicator and we were hitting sixteen knots. It was such a struggle to get there.
I also remember when we would have a battle stations drill (my appologies to CDR Vogelein) it
wouldn't take long for the Captain to have me pass the word (I was a sound powered phone
talker) to the after bridge that we had taken a direct hit on the bridge and we were all dead.
He would then pull out a cigar and light up.

We changed home port to Key West, in June of 1970.
Is she still around anywhere? Every time I see "Operation Pacific" starring John Wayne,
and the sub rams the Japanese ship, bending the bow and Ward Bond shouts, "Taker 'er down!"
I think of the Gilmore.
Keep up the good work, Eldon.

I was in the Navy from Sept.'63 to Sept.'67 and was curious to see if there might be any
historical information on the internet regarding the ships I served on. Being discharged over
30 years ago, I didn't expect to find much, if anything. My first ship was a Submarine Tender,
so I clicked on 'non-combatant ships' and (unbelievable), the first listing was 'Submarine Tenders'.
I was on the Sperry (AS-12) a sistership, from 8/64 thru 9/66. I visited her website and was
impressed. I saw the listing for the Howard W. Gilmore and wondered if it had the same kind of
'family' feel to it. When the picture came up and the music started, I actually got a lump in
my throat. These vessels were home for us for awhile, and when we did go to sea, they took
good care of us in fair or foul weather. By the flavor of the correspondence I've seen from
ex-tender sailors, I am proud to have been among this fine group.
As for your website .... anyone who can choke up this 53 year-old deserves a hearty, "WELL DONE".

I served on the USS Gilmore AS-16 in 1955 at Key West. I came off the
USS Petrel ASR-14 after going to SK school in Newport RI.
I remember the trip to Dry Tortuga, that was the only time
we left the dock. To get the coffee cups off the bottom. Hello
to Ed Davenport. I made SK3 on the Gilmore. In late 55 I was
transferred to the USS Saratoga CVA-60 in Brooklyn Navy Yard. My
days on the Gilmore were fun.

I served on the Gilmore from December 1961 to January of 1966. I was an MR3 when I got
out of the Navy. I worked in the machine shop X31. I also worked in the engraving shop X31E.
I was abord the Gilmore when Mrs Gilmore gave the ship The Hat and Sword that belonged to Howard.
That hat and sword is now in the Sub museum in Groton CT. I joined the Gilmore Memorial Association
this year (1998) at the reunion in Boston. It was great to see some of my old shipmates once again.
I hope to hear from some more. The Gilmore was a part of my life that I will never forget.

I think his fondest memories come from life aboard the USS Howard W. Gilmore. Thanks for

I was stationed aboard the USS Gilmore from 1977 to 1979 during its' LaMad period. I was
an E4/5 ETN that worked in the R4 shop as an ESM tech. I worked on alot of the ESM/IFF and
radar gear that were on the boats that the Gilmore (and later the USS Orion) serviced. I use
to spend alot of time in the optical shop "sweeping the scopes".
I rode the Gilmore to quite a few liberty ports and have few stories of my own about each.
When I was aboard, The Gilmore went to Genoa, Italy; Cannes, France; Palma DeMajorca, Spain;
Barcelona, Spain; Yugoslavia; Athens, Greece; (and if my recollection serves me well...)
Palma DeMajorca (again), Barcelona (again) and Palma DeMajorca (again)....
Memory is fuzzy. I might be confusing the Gilmore's Med cruises with The Orion's (limited)
port visits, but to the bet of my recollections, I believe that Th pretty accurate.
If you need EXACT dates, I might be able to provive them. I used to write my mom & my
girlfriend daily. I have kept all their letters. I usually dated my correspondence at
the top of the page. I would have to sort several shoeboxes (actually 4x4) boxes.
I also went through the yards with the Orion (AS 18) and rode it back across the Atlantic
(after Gitmo...) to help with the transition of the changing of the guards.
I actually wanted to go back to LaMaddalena...
Old stomping grounds for me.
I guess I was the only sailor onboard that really didn't "crave a Big Mac". (One of the most
frequent "bellyaches" of those stationed "On The Rock" was NO McDONALDS.)
To me, this was a blessing.
I heard many guys talk about THE FIRST THING THEY ARE GONNA DO when they get USA mainland was
GET A BIG MAC!!!
Whatever.
I have an excellent B&W photos of The "Silly Gilly" as it pulled into Cannes, France.
Also a great stern-on shot of the Gilmore with about 5 nuturing subs (one is the Nautilus
I believe) taken off of (St.) Stephano Island.
I'll dig through my through my memoirs, recollections and attics of my mind.
That's my 2 cents worth

My father, John C. Neff was a plank owner on the Gilmore and served in
the "pipe shop" for the duration of World War II. I am sorry to say that
my dad passed away just three short years ago at the age of 88. Although the war was
a difficult time, he spoke often of his experiences on the Gilmore with
pride. As a small boy, I remember hearing all about dad's escapades.
I forgot the year, but I had the pleasure of taking my dad to the first
ship reunion in Chicago. It was very special for him and it was
fascinating for me to actually meet some of his shipmates I'd seen in
old faded photos.
I do have several photos that I will scan and send in. One is a great
shot of the Gilmore in battle paint. Another is of the group of men he
worked with in the pipe shop.
