USS H. W. GILMORE AS-16

MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION

Established April 15, 1987

2 January,2008

As we all get older, often our thoughts return to our youth,
particularly our time aboard the
USS Howard W. Gilmore AS-16

The USS Howard W. Gilmore AS-16 was taken out of active service in 1980, and sadly to say she has been taken out of the ghost fleet and at the present time she is being cut up for scrap. Many of us recall that first time we climbed that steep accommodation ladder to reach the Quarterdeck. For many, especially those to whom this would be their first ship, it was an awesome experience. Such a huge mass of steel and all those decks and compartments to find one’s way about. Who can forget the long chow lines, the crowded compartments, the mid-watches, and the welcome cry of  ”Liberty party muster on the Quarter Deck!” And more than these, the great friendships made in those long days and nights at sea. Friendships that we thought would last forever. But we left the Gilmore, got separated, and mislaid those names and addresses. What would you give to relive some of those cherished memories?

In 1987 some Plank Owner’s got together and formed the USS Howard W. Gilmore Memorial Association. Here is a perfect opportunity to find a receptive audience for all those sea stories you’ve been saving all these years. Our dues are only $10.00 a year. At least three times a year you’ll receive a newsletter with stories, photographs, and all kinds of information about the various “lives” of the Gilmore. Whether you served in World War II, Korea, or later, there will be something for everyone. It might be a letter to the editor or a photograph of Sea operations. Or perhaps a candid shot, of possibly you and your buddies on liberty. There will be current news about our reunion where old shipmates and their wives and friends meet for a few days at some pleasant location. Over the past years we’ve gathered at such places as Chicago, Portland, Norfolk, San Diego, Niagara Falls, Boston, Mobile, St. Louis, Seattle and Charleston, SC. Our next Reunion is scheduled.

With over 340 names in our data base, it’s possible that you’ll meet that swabbie you went on liberty with. So why not take a chance on what we all think is a pretty good deal. To join simply fill out the enclosed membership form and mail along with a $10.00 check payable to the USS Gilmore Memorial Association. We certainly would like to have you as a member.

Sincerely,

Bob Munjas, Sec’y, -Treas.
