Cloud Computing Research

Here's some reading and video clips about cloud computing: http://sites.google.com/site/usfcomputerscience/cloud-computing. Read the articles and watch the clips.

Your task is to create your own page about cloud computing on your portfolio site. Provide a "take" on cloud computing. Define it, argue for it, argue against it. Associate it to other things. Refer to issues introduced by the videos and articles on the page linked to above. Follow links from there to other interesting items about cloud computing.

In your response, answer the following questions:

Define cloud computing in your own words.

Who are the major companies/people involved with cloud computing? What tools do they provide.

Define SaaS, utility computing, and Moore's Law. How does each relate to cloud computing.

Describe the benefits of cloud computing
for an ordinary computer user.

Describe the benefits of cloud computing for a start-up company. Be sure and mention the term 'scalability' in your answer.

What are the social concerns about cloud computing? What fears do individuals and organizations have.

Google has been criticized for its policies regarding search in China. Describe the criticism, and explain how the concerns relate to people's fears about cloud computing.

Technically speaking, do you feel more comfortable storing your web pages in the cloud, e.g., Google sites, or on a USF server? Explain why.


In writing your response, follow  the guidelines for Research Assignments on the syllabus.

You may work in teams of 1 or 2.

This assignment is due Wednesday, Feb. 4, at midnight.
