Usability Survey

I'm developing a survey on usability, I don't think it's quite right yet, but I would still welcome anyone using it to leave feedback on my research topic (or about the survey) - Click Here to take part in a usability survey, and support my PhD research, for anyone who does not want to remain anonymous, I would be pleased to take an interest in their research.

The survey compares these interfaces -

Diagrammatic - http://www.cems.uwe.ac.uk/~phale/ELearning/ELearningDemonstration2.htm.

And asks for further advice on end-user programming.

I'm interested in feedback from anyone, whatever their level of IT skills.

Survey - Seeking feedback on software usability.

Our Research Interests in Systems Enginering and Simulation.

The intention of this project is to create a way for non programmers to create software in high level open standards based declarative languages built with Semantic Web technologies. The reasoning behind this is that if Semantic Web languages can represent data, they can also represent programs, as programs are just a specialised kind of data. The non programmer would program with this declarative language by means of a diagrammatic visualisation.

Many people would like to make greater use of computer technology but are hampered by the need to learn programming languages if they are to fully interact with software. Instead they are limited to the use of certain generic features that are provided for them. A further constraint is the cost of software, and for this project we will develop free software and encourage a community of end-user developers, and modellers.

We aim to provide Semantic Web based modelling and simulation tools that are usable and programmable by end-users. This is in order to ease the difficulties involved in translating requirements between software experts and domain experts. Our research will develop, extend, and combine existing research in provision of web page development tools for end-users, meta-programming, and web based modelling and simulation tools. The diagram below explains the research area we intend to explore.

This research will be part of our co-ordinated efforts to enable end-user programming for knowledge management (including e-learning), modelling and decision support, and simulation. Therefore the research will concentrate mainly on translation for simulation and enabling non programmers to create web-based simulation systems. This is illustrated in the figure below.

End User Programming Diagram - Research Aim - Illustrating need to translate between human and computer and the increase in amount of calculation between domains of knowledge management, decision support and simulation. The increase in complexity is of calculation in the direction from knowledge management to decision support to simulation, and of information in the other direction from simulation to decision support to knowledge management.

The main research area will be the interface between Meta-Programming, Modelling and Simulation, and Semantic Web Model Creation, shaded in the figure below. This could allow end-users to develop their own Semantic Web based simulation and modelling tools using a graphical visual interface.

A simple illustration of the techniques we can use to further this research area is a demonstrator we completed for meta-programming of XML (eXtensible Markup Language) based drag and drop trees. Python is used as a translator between the XML representation of the trees and interactive graphical representations of them. This allows open standards platform independent end-user programming. Such techniques could be used with other Semantic Web based information representations based on languages and structures such as XML, RDF (Resource Description Framework), and OWL (Web Ontology Language), and provision of other controls. These could then be used as graphical components of a simulation system made available over the web. This demonstrator furthered the research of Anderson and Krause [1]. Whiteside also used XML based meta programming to allow end user programming of games with Simkin [2]. Semantic languages provide a higher level declarative view of the problem to be modelled.

Standardisation in XML/RDF enables use of declarative rules for web services. Rules play an important role in artificial intelligence, knowledge-based systems, and for intelligent agents. To allow information sharing and reuse, interoperability, and collaboration we will use an ontology centric approach [3]. Ontologies are defined by Gruber in [4], and he also examines how equations and quantities can be represented in an ontology. Extending such work can enable functions and calculations to be represented in OWL and called by a Semantic Web based programming language.

OWL/SWRL representation methodology for EXPRESS-driven product information model Part I. Implementation methodology, Zhao, W. and Liu, J.K. 2008. Computers in Industry - Article in Press, Corrected Proof - Abstract - This paper presents an ontology-based approach to enable semantic interoperability and reasoning over the product information model. The web ontology language (OWL) and the semantic web rule language (SWRL) in the Semantic Web are employed to construct the product information model. The traditional modeling language called EXPRESS is discussed. The representation methodology for EXPRESS-driven product information model is then proposed. The key of the representation methodology is mapping from EXPRESS to OWL/SWRL. Some illustrated examples are presented. - Keywords - Product information model; OWL; SWRL; EXPRESS; Ontology representation.

Simulation

Collaboration, simulation and modelling have been investigated to assist in determining the requirements for future research in modelling of problems.

Crapo et al. [26] explain that visual representations are often processed by people pre-attentively, and immediately, so this gives an advantage over text. This technique can be used more dynamically in simulations. Simulations represent the real world problem and provide constant feedback to the user on how the system is progressing. In this sense, visualisation is a type of simulation as visual interfaces are perceived in a similar way to the real world [26]. Pictorial metaphors are static, while a users' mental model is made up of mental images connected together by a set of rules. This is explained by Sasse [8]. The user runs a mental model like a simulation, this is explained by Crapo et al. [26] and [27]. Static user interfaces rely on a user to string together images into a mental model which correctly represents what the system is doing. A user may generate a mental model in response to user interface metaphors which is inconsistent with the system model. Shim et al. [18] explain "the mental models of stakeholders with various perspectives lie at the heart of the decision process, from defining what is a problem, to analysis of the results of trying to solve the problem." Simulation can help to ensure that the designers' model, system model and users' model are all the same. Ernst et al. [2] and Auer et al. [17] also make this point about mapping between user's mental model of a system, and the system model.

The figure below illustrates the problem to be solved, this is the need to translate between human and computer. It also demonstrates the complexity of the problem that needs solving. This is the complexity that is present in most software systems. Complexity varies according to the needs of the application. The complexity of calculation increases when moving from the domains of knowledge management through to decision support and simulation. The increase in complexity is of calculation in this direction from knowledge management to decision support to simulation, and of information in the other direction from simulation to decision support to knowledge management.

End User Programming Diagram - Illustrating need to translate between human and computer and the increase in amount of calculation between domains of knowledge management, decision support and simulation. The increase in complexity is of calculation in the direction from knowledge management to decision support to simulation, and of information in the other direction from simulation to decision support to knowledge management.

The research investigates provision of solutions for Knowledge Management, Decision support, and Simulation. The system provides automated translation from a model provided by the user, or by other systems into the software, ontology, and database representation. Miller and Baramidze [22] explain that for a "simulation study that includes model building, scenario creation, model execution, output analysis and saving/interpreting results. Ontologies can be useful during all of these phases." Any required calculations would then be made and translated to provide a model that can be interpreted by users.

Reichenthal [23] explains the use of the XML syntax SRML in sumulation. Kuljis and Paul [3] explain how XML and VRML can be used for simulation. Kuljis and Paul give a summary of the aims of the AARIA project for manufacturing simulation over the Internet. A significant advantage of VRML simulations over other media is that they contain a subset of CAD information that can be communicated into the system. Kim et al. [4] explain how VRML can be used for collaborative viewing and amending of mechanical parts. Phillips and Rodden [13] examine the use of VRML for building of collaborative virtual worlds. Nidamarthi et al. [14] made use of VRML to allow scientists and engineers to collaborate on the design of Nanotechnology parts.

Feng and Song evaluate simulation for process planning [10].

A future task to be undertaken would be the inclusion of uncertainty in the automatically produced models, for situations where accurate information cannot be provided for the model. This would require provision of a way of handling uncertainty for parameters within the ontology, e.g. as 3 values describing a triangular distribution rather than a unique absolute value. The decision support meta-program could be expanded to write out the code to run Monte-Carlo sampling, hence making use of the statistical uncertainty capability, Sweeting explains Monte-Carlo simulation [21]. Miller and Baramidze [22] examine efforts to develop mathematical semantic representations above the syntactical representations of MathML. This effort should make it possible for standardisation of the representation of mathematical expressions that relate nodes, and their values and expressions, to each other. The next stage in the research surrounding this thesis will be provision of constraints to prevent invalid mathematical expressions. Miller and Baramidzes' DEMO system [5] uses OWL to define a simulation and modelling class hierarchy. It would be very useful to create an example to demonstrate this with a practical model to test the use of this ontology.

Modelling and Web-Based Simulation

Huang and Mak [12] evaluate issues in the development and implementation of web applications for product design and manufacture. Reed et al. [9] show how web based modelling and simulation can be used for improving the aircraft design process. Shen [6] examines web based discrete-event simulation.

Lacy and Gerber [19] examine how OWL can be used to aid modelling and simulation. Miller and Baramidze [22] explain that building generic ontologies for modelling and simulation is hard, as this is not domain specific and there is need for rigorous definitions of mathematical concepts.

Our research has involved creating an OWL (Web Ontology Language) ontology to enable users to specify parameters in diagrammatic form. It could be possible to extend the semantics used in the specification of models to allow the creation of a framework for simulations. Because the ontology uses open standards, these simulations could be made broadly available on the web. It is important that the necessary infrastructure is created to allow this facility to be added. The approaches of others to this problem have been examined. Page [24][25], Page et al. [28] and Page and Opper [11] examine the nature of web-based simulations. Miller et al. [20] explain the technology behind web-based simulations, and argue the need for demonstrating the application of web-based simulations for major projects. Fishwick and Miller [15] and Park and Fishwick [16] examine the use of ontologies for modelling and simulation. The authors were involved in the RUBE project that developed a system for battle simulations. The RUBE project uses open standards and Protégé for the ontology, and outputs some code automatically. Kuljis and Paul [3] evaluate progress in this field of web simulation. They argue the need for web-based simulations to be focussed on solving real-world problems in order to be successful. Kim et al. [1] explain how techniques of generating executable code from documents specified in standardised XML can be used to create simulations. Simulations could also be used for optimization and Chen and Yücesan [7] investigate this. So web based simulation is an area of research that is worth exploring. The use of process models can allow accurate manufacturing times to be generated. This requires dynamic models of factories, cells and processes. Future research will involve developing simulation software with a web interface, which could determine a process plan and reflect resource and time constraints. Also it is necessary for users of a system to be able to gather information from various computer systems such as databases and spreadsheets. There is a conflict between the aim to develop an ideal representation of knowledge using an ontology editor, and the practical need to get the data from the database or application it is currently held in. The research undertaken in this thesis, prototypes ways of creating information and of finding it. Crapo et al. [26] and [27] have also investigated this problem.

So you think you can design an Aeroengine? - http://royalsociety.org/exhibit.asp?id=4662 - Economic development and the desire of modern society to travel mean that the number of flights taken worldwide is increasing 8% year on year. As a result, air travel is fast becoming a major contributor to climate change. Flying to Australia and back generates more carbon dioxide than the average driver in one year. 'The trick of keeping hundreds of tonnes of people and machine in the air and transporting them thousands of miles will always have some environmental consequences, the aim is to minimise the impact', says Phil Withers of the School of Materials at the University of Manchester. - Using state of the art techniques, Phil and his colleagues are working with Rolls-Royce to ensure the safety of new materials and manufacturing processes for the next generation of jet engines. - So You Think You Can Design a Jet Engine PDF.

Systems Engineering

Management of Complexity

Cagle [1] explains that "You can never eliminate complexity from a system, you can only move it from place to place". Booch [2] states "Systems are becoming more complex, and often try to overcome complexity with more complexity. A bad process itself can amplify complexity." He also explains that developers should produce simpler software that increases productivity. He recommends to "grow a system's architecture through the incremental and iterative release of testable executables". This is the approach used throughout the thesis, and for this purpose, software has been released via the web in order to receive feedback. The purpose of the research is to allow software developers to deal with complexity as far as possible in order to leave the end-user free to model their own problems. Ciocoiu et al. [3] explain that growing complexity in manufacturing hinders the ability to share information as the meaning is affected by its context.

Engineering and Technological Innovation: IMETI 2008 - http://www.infocybereng.org/imeti2008/website/default.asp?vc=20 - June 29th - July 2nd, 2008 - Orlando, Florida, USA - Engineering activities are based on the development of new Knowledge (scientia), new 'made things' (techné) and/or new ways of working and doing (praxis). Scientia, Techné and praxis are three important dimensions of a comprehensive conception of Engineering as a whole. Engineering, as Scientia, is mostly developed in academia; as techné is practiced in industry generating technological innovations; and as praxis is carried out in technical and non-technical organizations, supporting managerial activities and technical procedures, via methodical and methodological design and implementation. This is why Engineering provides one of the most solid academic and professional substrata for bridging among Universities, industries and governments. - Publications and conferences related to Engineering are usually oriented to one of its three dimensions. While this is an adequate thing to do when disciplinary focus is sought, it does not represent Engineering as a whole and it misses the very important synergic relationships among the three kinds of engineering activities mentioned above. This is why a group of scholars, professionals and consultants, in the field of engineering, considered the possibility of initiating a publishing process and organizing a conference where presentations will not be reduced to one of the Engineering's dimensions, but to foster the participation of academics, practitioners and managers in the three dimensions of Engineering, in the same conference, or in the same publication, so they can synergistically interact with each other. A consequence of this purpose is the organization of IMETI 2008, and the publication of multiple-author books series, where submissions will be accepted for the presentation of:

  • New knowledge (Engineering as Scientia);
  • New products and services, i.e. technological innovations (Engineering as techné);
  • New technical and managerial methods and methodologies (Engineering as praxis);
  • New meta-engineering (Engineering of Engineering activities) knowledge, innovations and methodologies.

BCS (British Computer Society) - London Central - http://www.londoncentral.bcs.org/events/forthcoming-events.php - Thursday 24th January 2008 - title : Provoking Creativity: Imagine What Your Requirements Could be Like - speaker: Neil Maiden, Professor of Systems Engineering and Head of the Centre for Human-Computer Interface Design - Requirements, City University School of Informatics - venue : BCS, Southampton Street, London - Specifying requirements is too often seen as a "stenographer's task". The requirements engineer passively listens and records while the stakeholders state their needs. However, this approach relies on stakeholders knowing what they need, and what they want. But people do not know what they want until they see it. Most useful products come not from stakeholders' imagination, but from an invention. Neil shows that requirements engineering should be a creative process and describes techniques to invent requirements based on results from current research. - Neil has directed inter-disciplinary research in requirements engineering for 15 years and is the Editor of the IEEE Software's Requirements column.

BCS (British Computer Society) - London Central - http://www.londoncentral.bcs.org/events/forthcoming-events.php - Thursday 17th April 2008 title : Science and Engineering: a collusion of cultures - speaker : Professor Sir Tony Hoare, Principal Researcher, Microsoft Research, Cambridge - venue : BCS, Southampton Street, London (Joint event with Kingston and Croydon Branch) - Pure Science and practical Engineering lie at two ends of a wide cultural spectrum, diametrically opposed across many dimensions. In every branch of Engineering Science, the intellectual integrity of the discipline, as well as its practical utility, requires that these cultures must not collide. Rather, they must collude in the old etymological sense of playing fairly together. A particular example treated in this talk is the collusion of the Science of Programming with the Engineering of Software.

  • New knowledge (Engineering as Scientia);
  • New products and services, i.e. technological innovations (Engineering as techné);
  • New technical and managerial methods and methodologies (Engineering as praxis);
  • New meta-engineering (Engineering of Engineering activities) knowledge, innovations and methodologies.

More details regarding the notion of Engineering and reasoning supporting the definition given above can be found in the article "The Essence of Engineering and Meta-Engineering: A Work in Progress" (Callaos, 2008) which is available at http://www.iiis.org/Nagib-Callaos/Engineering-and-Meta-Engineering/.

Second IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing - IEEE ICSC2008 - http://icsc.eecs.uci.edu/ - August 4th-7th, 2008, Santa Clara, CA, USA - Sponsored by IEEE Computer Society - The field of Semantic Computing (SC) brings together those disciplines concerned with connecting the (often vaguely-formulated) intentions of humans with computational content. This connection can go both ways: retrieving, using and manipulating existing content according to user's goals ("do what the user means"); and creating, rearranging, and managing content that matches the author's intentions ("do what the author means"). - The content addressed in SC includes, but is not limited to, structured and semi-structured data, multimedia data, text, programs, services and, even, network behavior. This connection between content and the user is made via (1) Semantic Analysis, which analyzes content with the goal of converting it to meaning (semantics); (2) Semantic Integration, which integrates content and semantics from multiple sources; (3) Semantic Applications, which utilize content and semantics to solve problems; and (4) Semantic Interfaces, which attempt to interpret users' intentions expressed in natural language or other communicative forms.

Although commonly referred to as a chain, in practice the various relationships form a complex multidimensional network of organisations. It is usually the case that no one organisation controls the overall supply chain for any particular product.
