Future Projects for KM and KM-like Initiatives

The KM Pilot, while not finished yet (there's plenty of products still to produce) provided food for thought for additional projects.  Here are a few ideas; your input is eagerly sought.

OPC Culture

There are a number of incidents which have helped create the OPC culture.  These tales might be lost, unless captured, and yet the cultural piece will live on. We might find ourselves at some point cutting the roast in half, but not knowing why we do it.

We'd like to capture some tales which help define the OPC culture.  Here are some thoughts:

===================================================================

CASE STUDY/STORY                                STORY TELLER

District CPC where the flag ends the CPC        Mike McGrath
less than 30 minutes into the start of the
intervention.

OPC who was fired due to fradulant              Danny Prosser
travel claims

OPC who was fired due to not showing-up         Dan Canavan
for work and conducting a real-estate
business "on the side."

The Boulder Extravangaza                        Chris Wehrenberg

Renting a car after Boulder                     Danny Prosser

Interventions Gone Bad

Not to be confused with Coasties Gone Wild, we'd like to collect cautionary tales of consultant gigs gone sour.  It's always better to learn from someone else's mistakes rather than suffering through the mistake yourself.

Military OPCs: Impact and Lessons Learned

Our military OPCs bring much to the table for consulting.  Anecdotally, the tour as an OPC can, at times, be less than helpful to a career... or so the tale goes.  We'd like to interview several military members who are past OPCs.  What was the impact of their OPC tour on their career (positive, negative, and neutral impact); what lessons did they learn from their OPC tour?

Possible interviewees:
  • Richter Tipton
  • Jay Hawthorne
  • Steve Werner
Other random bits concerning military members:
  • What to wear during a gig/intervention
  • Impact of rank when working with client/other military members
  • Evaluations
  • Realization that at start may not base-line qualified to do the job.

Leaders who Value and Use the Criteria and Consultants

We've talked about creating some sort of a marketing video.  Ideally, we'd have interviews from Coast Guard leaders who value the Criteria and use the Criteria. Even more ideally, these leaders would have used and benefited from OPC assistance at some point and can speak about the benefits and value of using a Coast Guard internal consultant.

Thoughts about who to interview:
  • ADM Thad Allen
  • VADM Jody Breckenridge
  • CDR Albertson (MSU Morgan City)
  • CDR Norton (Lower Miss)
  • CAPT Ngyun (Ohio Valley)
  • CDR Steve Wishman (Pittsburgh)
  • CAPT Buddy Custard
  • CAPT Lincoln Stroh
  • CAPT Paul Thomas

Additional Random Thoughts about Videos

We could use some of these videos, such as the already produced intro by Joy, in the OPC course.  Could have discussion questions around issues raised in the video.  Could ask question first, have students discuss, and then show a video with a possible "expert" answer.

Could put together videos with vignettes around the same topic from several consultants.

Could, perhaps, use some video vignettes with the TLaF course, particularly about alignment issues.

Additional Thoughts

Would we benefit from comparing ourselves, work, processes, and systems with other consulting firms, either external or internal.  Ridge Consulting, perhaps?  That federal agency with loaned SES who do consulting.

What about conferences?  How do other consulting firms do conferences?
