Jaguar Drumline Audition Packets Now Available Online

The audition materials for the 2012-2013 Jag Drumline are now available.  The packets are available as a downloadable PDF for each of the battery instruments, as well as the front ensemble.  In addition to these packets, digital recordings of each exercise are available for students to utilize when practicing and preparing for the auditions.  The auditions take place on the USA campus July 11-13, 2012, and students must apply in order to attend.  A free, optional audition clinic for all students eligible to audition will be held on the USA campus on Saturday, May 19.

Spring Percussion GALA - USA STEEL BAND PREMIERE

USA Percussion Ensemble, guest artist Gary Cook, World Music Group 

Premiere of USA STEEL

April 16 & April 17, 7:30 pm: Recital Hall, Laidlaw Performing Arts Center

The concert will feature a night of iconic works for percussion with guest artist Gary Cook including David Maslanka’s Crown of Thorns and Ionisation by Edgard Varese as well as the premiere of the USA Steel Band bringing the sounds of the Caribbean to the audience. The ever-popular World Music Group will also perform a variety of traditional drumming and dancing works as part of the evening events.

Guest Artist Gary Cook and USA Director of Perucssion, Michael Sammons soloists with the USA Wind Ensemble, Dr. Greg Gruner, conducting.

Gary Cook's most recent CD on Albany Records features the Philip Glass Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Wind Ensemble.Cook was Timpanist and Principal Percussionist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra for over two decades and held similar posts with the Arizona Opera and other orchestras. In the summer, Cook is Principal Percussionist with the Crested Butte Music Festival in Colorado and has performed with other summer music festivals in Colorado and Nevada. He is well known as the author of Teaching Percussion, currently in its third edition with DVDs and used world-wide. He is Professor Emeritus of Music at the University of Arizona where he founded the percussion department in 1975 and taught for thirty-three years until retiring in 2008. From 1994 to 1999 he served as Director of the UA School of Music and Dance. 

He enjoys commissioning new music for percussion and chamber music and voice combinations and has premiered and recorded many commissions. Cook was President of the international professional organization, the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), from 2007-2008 and received the PAS Lifetime Achievement in Education Award in 2011. He is most proud of his many former students who hold distinguished professorships in colleges and universities around the country and in Trinidad, perform professionally around the world, and are successful teachers and performers in all areas of music and the arts.

USA Steel Band Announced

USA STEEL will premiere at the Spring Percussion Ensemble Concert on Monday, April 16 and Tuesday, April 17. The ensemble is open to any university student on campus by audition. Auditions will be based on overall musicianship: keeping time, rhythmic accuracy and music reading. The steel band meets on Monday from 7:30-8:30pm. No previous steel band experience is required.  

USA STEEL is dedicated to the preservation and expansion of the steel pan art form and offers students an opportunity to explore the steel band tradition, originating in Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of pan. The band performs many styles of music including a variety of popular and music from the Caribbean including calypso, soca and raggae as well as American popular music, jazz and classical styles.
