URUGYASAn Pag'salin'urog han Uyas Kadaanan

Borongan City, Province of Eastern Samar, Philippines

One very important heritage we have for the Filipino culture to be considered as rich and exciting, is seem missing in the places they used to occupy--at the backyards, the streets, and even on rivers, by the sea shores, and inside our houses--The traditional games and toys which served as the action and entertainment in every space around and inside them... or us who enjoyed them as well. It is a symbol for being Eastern Samarnon or being a Filipino with a colorful heritage. Olden games and toys which the ancestors of the Eastern Samar had learned, played and enjoyed, is one great treasure we must not neglect to cultivate and share its goodness to the incoming generations.

Simple toys and games were the favorite past time for the children since the early civilizations of Eastern Samar. when no one yet in the neighborhood owns TV sets, computers, and digital gadgets. These traditional games filled the days of the children and the child at heart of the old days with joyful memories--the laughter, the teasing, the misunderstandings and yet shortly turn back to friends again, the game plans, and even the missed house tasks like the cooking of rice for the lunch--which  made other parents to scold the young player and until they cooked the playing stuffs instead, as a disciplinary measures. But most of all, the pleasure and learning experience that build the children's good future is unmeasured, and despite of many awkward and happy moments we cannot detach with the playing of games those days, all those instances made us a very well and complete beings.

Although the native games were still played in the following generations, changes was impossible to stop. During the American period, many modern games was introduced--baseball, basketball, volleyball, track and field, and so the old games little by little become not the "spot" for admiration. 1985 came, electricity started to regain and more new form of entertainments flourished just like the betamax, game&watch, and more. In the turn of the mellinium until to this times, much more modern things like computerized or online gaming was introduced to the present generation Eastern Samar, and those old games from our forefathers, are now almost gone, except in the memories of the few left elders who witnessed the rich traditions. Today, these games are  steadily passing away with the leaves of the calendars, without the younger generations' interests even to ask at least on knowing about the slightest things from their forefather's past--the history they can be proud of, like the native games they had played.

Why This Site is Published?

The site is created for three main reasons -- one is to inform the natives of Eastern Samar and also the people who are from other places  about few things the province can share.  Second, is to encourage everyone to get involve or to be more supportive in bringing back to life the traditions of our great grandparents. May it not become the scene on every streets or yards, but at least in some place, these games be remembered and played. The other purpose is to create another access in gathering more facts about traditional games (uyas)of Eastern Samar, that may be shared by the people who have the knowledge about them, or maybe with any topics related to arts, history and culture of the said province.

The games or toys on the site are not yet accurately recognized, as from where it actually originated, or when it is first played in the province of Eastern Samar. The partial lists of games on this site are divided or separated in 2  groups or era, first is the games and toys believed to be existent in the province before 1900 , and the second is the games that become more popular during 1900 - 1985. The classification was simply made through analyzing the kind of toys, materials or equipments it uses, the kind/nature of the game or its mechanics, and the age of the person who told their experiences during the interview.

Names of the games recorded here may had transformed or vary due to new terms usually introduced by the later generations who played the games or toys--some names maybe called in Spanish, Tagalog or in English terms, which already quoted as identifications by the children who played the games during the Spanish period up to the present. But some names remained as it was, especially some of the games that did not happen to be so popular with the 20th century generations or those which have no equivalent games or meaning to modern terms. A single name or game/toy may  have more than one versions of mechanics, depending on the area or time it was played.
