The Club is back! The January 2011 Brisbane floods have dealt the club a blow, but we are back. The courts have been refurbished, and we are slowly ramping back up to speed. Please check the Events page for our new schedule of play times.News12 Mar 2012A very warm welcome to new members who have joined recently. There has been an increased turnout for our Social nights, which is gratifying to see. The club needs a solid roster of paid-up members so that we can negotiate facilities with UQ sports and run the club. This is why we are running a strong membership drive now, to make sure that all regulars are paid up and current as of March. Please support the club if you enjoy squash at the university. Go to the counter at the UQ Sport and Fitness centre and tell them you wish to join the UQ squash club. Ensure that you fill in the form with your email address so that we can keep you informed with our mailing list. There's good and bad news. The good news is, our long awaited downstairs courts are finally ready after the second round of repairs. The bad news is, one of the courts started falling apart as soon as a ball touched the wall. This means it will need to be repaired for a third time. Luckily the other court seems ok so far. However the ultimate good news is, after much negotiation thanks to your club captain Gavin, we have managed to secure three courts for Monday and Wednesday social nights. Three courts means we can fit more people in for meaningful playtime, which is a lot more value for your money. We are also planning to run coaching sessions in the future, to introduce more beginners to the wonderful sport of squash and to offer intermediate players some hints on improving their game. Watch this space! However, don't let the fact that you are a beginner deter you from joining us before that happens. There are many others in the same situation and you will be able to learn together on Monday and Wednesday nights. Every time I come to the courts, I pity the poor gals and guys on the cycle machines or treadmills in the cardio room suffering from mind numbing boredom when just 5 metres away, they could be using up the same number of calories playing a game that uses the brain as well as the muscles and heart. What's more, time flies by because of the fun that is had. Squash: a FUN way to get fit. 1 Feb 2012We have had a few enquiries about playing in competitions. The club will field teams in three divisions (A1-A3) in the Brisbane Northside competition. The new season begins in early April, so now is the time to indicate your interest to the club captain. For more details have a look at the competitions page. The best way to find out more is to come to one of our Social Nights on Mondays or Wednesdays, or to Saturday practice. Please see our Events page for more details. 12 Jan 2012Some of you may have noticed the two courts downstairs in a state of repair again. Apparently the wall surfaces were not adequately prepared the first time around, and had begun to peel within a week of resuming activities. Therefore the contractors have been called in to rectify the situation. As a result we will be down to 2 courts again. We anticipate the work to be done by the end of February. Fingers crossed. In the meantime we are still running social nights on Mondays and Wednesdays. The good news is that we have extended the hours from 8pm to 10pm. So come along and introduce yourself if you want to find out more about the club. Look at the events page for times and venue. |
