Patrick McDonnell is the creator of the well-respected comic strip "Mutts" and many popular picture books for children, including Just Like Heaven, which I'll be reading aloud to the students at UPark this week.  Just Like Heaven is the fourth book by McDonnell I've presented during 2011-2012 school year.  McDonnell is a huge animal welfare advocate and sits on the board of the Humane Society of the United States.

The Mutts Wall

One of the efforts I initiated after reading aloud the book Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell was to challenge the children to submit "Mutts" comic strips, which I began posting to the drop ceiling behind the circulation desk in our little library.  The display features an ever-growing collection of daily and Sunday comics gathered by our community of readers.  It's been exciting to see so many children take to this effort.  Many have told me their grandparents are helping them gather the strips, which brightens my heart.  Among the many goals I've set is to get children to read more—whatever they may choose, and I hope the students here will be inspired by the words and art of Patrick McDonnell to make a difference not only in their lives but in those closest to them…and eventually in the world at large.  Every journey begins with one small step.  I invite you to join us on this adventure as we seek to change the planet for the better.—mister hernández
