March 4, 2010.  UPA students at peek cherry blossom time In April, 2011, 10 students from UPA will travel to Washington DC to participate in a study program with the Close Up Foundation.  We have already secured a scholarship for $500 for each student, and the families of the students are also contributing, but in order for this trip to happen, we must raise an additional $500 per student. One month before trip, UPA kids meeting with Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, March, 2010 UPA is an Oakland public middle school in the heart of the Fruitvale neighborhood.  90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.  Most of the students going on this trip are first or second generation Americans and will be the first in their family to go to college.  This trip will certainly make a profound impact on each student, their families, our school, and our community.  Funds that we raise above what is needed for this trip will help make additional learning experiences, beyond the classroom, available to UPA kids.  (Like our Pt. Reyes Environmental Education program!)
