Think Globally, Act Locally
The University of Ottawa Greens work with the Green Parties of Canada and Ontario and like-minded groups on campus to:
1. Raise awareness of environmental and social issues affecting both Canada and the entire planet.
2. Promote sustainable changes on campus and encourage students to live "green".
3. Encourage youth to participate in politics in all capacities.

Top 5 Reasons to Join the UOttawa Greens
It’s September 2009.
You step back onto your fresh but familiar campus with a sense of enthusiasm and new beginnings. You smile to know that there are no exams to worry about (yet), your bank account is looking healthy from all the summer savings, and you will soon be reunited with the friends you left last spring. As you walk to your first class, you refrain from taking the trodden shortcut across the football field to prevent dirtying your new and offensively white running shoes. With overly priced textbooks in hand (that you swear you will read from cover-to-cover, if only to get your money’s worth), you walk through the clean hallways until… there it is, right in front of you: Clubs Week.
Suddenly your eyes are struggling to focus as brightly coloured posters and catchy slogans pull you from table to table. You walk cautiously by the tables, like a Supreme Court judge inspecting pieces of evidence, knowing that the decisions you make at this crucial moment, the sign-up sheets that you bravely write your name on, could become a significant part of your next eight months.
1. Meet new people. By joining the UOG, you’ll realize the satisfaction in meeting peers with common interests that range far beyond frequenting local pubs. This is an opportunity to join a diverse group of people who are all committed to the long-term survival of our planet; this is an opportunity to make lasting friendship2
2. Make your mark. Throughout history, campuses have played a critical role in the success of social movements. The campus atmosphere allows ideas to flow easily and sets an extraordinary stage for social change. Your creativity and optimism can be easily translated into concrete changes in your community, especially if you build a united student population. You won’t be a student forever, so make the best use of your time in this unique setting!
3. Feel good about your future. Recent events in global and Canadian politics can be draining and might make you question the direction of Canada, but by focusing your energy into a political party that matches your values, you can help pressure the current Canadian government to change its policies. As part of the UOG, you will feel confident that your contributions are helping to build a more sustainable future for Canadians.
4. Get experience. Joining a campus club, especially a political one, can give you some of the most relevant and useful job experience yet. You will gain experience with effective event organizing, political campaigning, turning ideas into action. This experience will prove invaluable long after graduation. Local Green candidates (Jen Hunter in Ottawa Centre, Akbar Manoussi in Ottawa-Vanier) will be working with UOttawa Greens to build a strong campaign team in the next federal election.
5. Be part of a movement. The Green Party is growing; polls and by-elections show the Green Party has about 12% support nation-wide, which is almost tied with the NDP. We have also seen a massive increase in media coverage of the Green Party and our policies. By joining the UOG, you are helping the growth and progression of this active, dynamic, and revolutionary party. Uniting socially-conscious and politically-active students across the nation will help to provide the final push that our party needs to elect representatives to Parliament.
Now that you’re convinced, take action! Simply send us an e-mail to say “I WANT TO JOIN THE U OF OTTAWA GREENS!!!!” and we will hook you up with everything you need to know and details about upcoming events.
