Next Meeting Page

We are getting a great collection of games together at the library.  However, please feel free to bring in your own favorite games, too.  Is there a game that you would like to know more about before buying or would like to play with others at game night?  Is there a game you'd be willing to act as Game Guide for and teachpeople?  Post it here and maybe someone in the group has it and is willing to bring it along next time or it is already in our game collection

Click Add Item, below, and indicate the following information about your participation in the upcoming meeting (all fields OPTIONAL):
  • Name or initials:  This is OPTIONAL, but a first name or initial will help your friends know you'll be at the meeting.
  • I'm Bringing... List games you plan to bring, either to play with others or to let others play. You may also list snacks or beverages you'll be bringing.
  • I Want to Play... List games you want to play at the meeting.  It can be the one game you really want to play, or a selection of titles you'd be willing to play, and can be games you own, games in the library's collection, or games you'd like someone to bring.
  • I Want To Learn About... List games you DON'T own, but would like to learn about; if you list it here, perhaps someone will bring it to the meeting.
  • I Will Teach... List one game from your I Want To Play list that you will make yourself available for most of the meeting to teach people to play.  There is no obligation to sign up to teach a game.
The next meeting is Wednesday, August 5

MEETING REMINDER
The next meeting of the Unplug & Play game group will take place at Jervis Library on Wednesday, July 1, starting at 6pm in the library's accessible auditorium.

The Game of the Month is Mad Gab. Mad Gab is a game for 2-12 players in which you must pay attention to what you hear, not what is said. So the when the puzzle ASK RUDE ARRIVE HER is read, you must listen carefully to figure out it sounds like "A Screwdriver." You and your teammates have 30 seconds to sound out three puzzles. Guess right and your team scores the point! Miss it and the other team can steal!

For more information about Mad Gab and nearly every other board game imaginable, visit <http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/764>.

Volunteering for the July meeting are Kim Glantz and Kerry Edwards, who will act as Game Guides for Mad Gab, and Peter Chien, who will be Library Ambassador. Our thanks to all those who volunteered for the July meeting!

Popcorn will be provided by the library. Participants are invited to bring their own games from home, as well as light snacks and beverages to share (nothing gooey or greasy, please!).

JUNE MEETING REPORT
The June meeting of Unplug & Play was attended by 14 gamers. The Games of the Month were the card games 31 and Slap Jack. Several other games were played at the meeting, including Boggle (rated an average of 5 out of 5 stars by 3 players), Checkers (rated 4/5 by 2), the card game Baloney Sandwich (rated 4/5 by 2), Wits and Wagers (rated 3.7/5 by 3), Pictureka (rated 5/5 by 1), and Hellas (rated 4/5 by 2). Participants expressed an interest in learning or playing Blokus, Bananagrams, Set, Trivial Pursuit, Wits and Wagers, and Dominion. Library Ambassador at the June meeting was Peter Chien. Game Guides were students Brian and Kyle. Popcorn for the June meeting was provided by Jervis Library. Peter forgot to take nominations for Game of the Month at the meeting, so he requested nominations by email. Mad Gab received the only nomination.

NEW GAME DISPLAY IN THE LIBRARY
A new display has been set up next to the elevator entrance in the lobby of the library. Each month, a new game will be displayed so people can get a closer look at the components and learn a little about the game--hopefully, enough to make them want to play! In June the tile-laying game Carcassonne was on display. Look for a new game every month.

UNPLUG & PLAY WIKI
Unplug & Play has a website, and you are invited to contribute! The Unplug & Play wiki has pages that tell about the program, list what games are in the library's collection, and tell about the upcoming meeting. There's a page for contributors to list what they will be bringing to the next meeting, what games they want to play, or what games they would be willing to teach, and a page to provide reviews, discuss games and ask questions of other contributors. Anyone can visit the website--just go to http://www.jervislibrary.org and click on the Unplug & Play button--but only persons who are granted permission may contribute to the website. To request permission to contribute, fill out and submit the form at <http://bit.ly/upZt4>.

Hope to see you across the table on July 1!

--Peter Chien

========================

UNPLUG & PLAY is a program at Jervis Library featuring board games and card games for players age 8 and up. One night a month, we invite you to UNPLUG--turn off your TV, your cell phone, your computer and your video games--and join others at the library to play board games and card games, both old favorites and new. At Unplug & Play, you can learn a new game or show others a game you love. Play games in the librarys collection or bring a game from home to share.

GAME OF THE MONTH NOMINATIONS: Each month, Unplug & Play features a Game of the Month selected by Unplug & Play participants. Any board or card game for ages 8 and up may be nominated for Game of the Month, but only games with a willing volunteer to act as "Game Guide" will be eligible for selection. The Game Guide will dedicate his or her participation at the next meeting to teaching people how to play the Game of the Month. Make your nominations on the sheet provided when you sign in at the meeting, or email pchien ("at" sign) midyork dot org.

LEARN MORE about Unplug & Play by clicking on the Unplug & Play button on the library's website, http://www.jervislibrary.org.
