UNM Mountaineering Club

Collegiate Climbing Series

USA Climbing has created a Collegiate Climbing Series which encourages all climbers currently enrolled in classes to compete. UNM is part of the New Mexico/Colorado Region, and five competitions were held last season. UNM Mountaineering Club would like to encourage all interested people to join the UNM Competitive Climbing Team. Here are some details:

  • All skill levels are welcome
  • Team will be separated into Novice, Intermediate and Advanced groups
  • All groups will receive professional level training from either Brandi Proffitt or Timy Fairfield
  • UNM Mountaineering will do its best to subsidize the cost of training and competition
Please contact the UNM Mountaineering Club if interested.

Fall 2009 Taos Mountain Film Festival

The Taos Mountain Film Festival has once again offered to discount tickets for us! The discount is 25% if we buy more than 12 6-punch passes or Khyber  passes (combined). The club will kick in another $15.00, bringing the cost down even further. For those with friends and family that are not members, we will still offer the 25% discount (minus a $3.00 administrational fee). This event is a great opportunity to see some awesome adventure sport and environmental films and also to hang out with your fellow mountaineering club members. Here are some more details:

  • For film-festival details, visit mountainfilm.net
  • Deadline to sign up for passes: Tuesday, 10/6
  • We usually head up on Friday after class
  • Passes
    • 6-punch passes will cost $30.00 for members (usually $60)
    • Khyber (all access) passes will cost $97.50 for members (usually $150)
    • If a non-member would like to purchase a pass, add $18.00 to the price.
  • Getting There:
    • Driving/carpooling: Send an email to the listserv if you are looking for a ride or someone to ride in your car (mtnclub-l@list.unm.edu)
    • Take the Train: for $16.00 per person, you can take the Rail Runner to Santa Fe, then hop on the Taos Express bus. Once in Taos, you can ride the local transportation free if you show your Taos Express receipt.
  • Staying There:
    • There is camping available all around Taos.
    • My favorite spots are probably off the road which leads to Angel Fire. For those using public transport, you can either hitch, or meet up with other mountaineering club members who are driving. There are also campgrounds ($) off the main road that you can reach with the bus.
