I am into packing extremely light/compact, 1 oz, 30g! I saved one pound, 450g, on two pair of shoes by making a common pair of removable soles. It is simple to move them to another pair of shoes. It is a quite easy Do It Yourself project or you can have it done at the shoe repair shop.

The DIY instructions are a very small part of the (almost) complete work of how to travel the world or neighborhood with:
Ultra Compact Luggage, 1 oz, 30 g. All in the pockets! Master the art of packing light! Novel features of Clothes and Accessories that keep you cooler. Compacted Electronic Gear, Phone, camera etc. Light\Compact Warming Clothes. 20 miscellaneous tips and tricks.
The universal sole may become a must have for greenies. Imagine having to admit that you can only use one pair of soles at a time and still having soles on all your shoes.
The Universal Sole is a relative to the "Universal Phone Charger", a brainchild of the European Union. By law hand phones will be sold there, around 2011, without the charger. The Universal Charger you buy extra. I don't think it is a good idea. There are many examples of this kind of legislation not being beneficial: hull shape of freighter boats made inefficient because of influence of custom's fee rules based on ship's dimensions. But if successful they may e.g. enforce the "universal car engine", three sizes 50, 100, 200 HP! Which will save much more material than the charger! And later everything from the Universal Tooth Pick Head to the Universal Tanker etc, etc. Well, well. March 2011 "ST-Ericsson's PM2300 will charge smartphones and tablets twice as fast, speeding to market this fall." "that can juice them up at the brisk rate of 3 Amps." Yes, tablets have seriously arrived on the arena since EU started its work.... I guess the universal charger can't manage 3 Amps and just now has become more or less obsolete. http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/24/st-ericssons-pm2300-will-charge-smartphones-and-tablets-twice-a/ Hopefully the Universal Sole will also be enforced by law and thousands of tons of sole material will be saved annually. I have contacted The EU and told them I have an idea that can save millions of tons of a commodity per year. They replied with a tirade about patents. I asked again, no answer yet.
