Science in Sevenoaks

The Science Group, has a different format from the study groups.  Its monthly talks are open to all members of our U3A and are held on the second Monday in the Otford Village Memorial Hall Club Room, with an entry charge of £2, which incudes tea.  The talks are given mainly by invited speakers, but supplemented by presentations from our own members.  Finding good speakers is always a challenge and success depends on our having a committee whose members have a wide range of contacts, as well as involvement in other organisations at which they will have heard a good talk.  In addition to the talks, we arrange visits to a variety of places of scientific or technological interest.  Over time it becomes increasingly difficult to find new venues, although proximity to London is extremely helpful. Inevitably, a repeat visit may be scheduled after a gap of a few years.  Recently the group has introduced new events by collaborating with a nearby organisation which is devoted to sustainability; joint activities have attracted audiences of around fifty people.

Future Meetings:

2012

We are fortunate in having among our 880 members a significant number with an interest or expertise in science and related topics.  Our scope covers ‘pure’ science, technology, medicine and philosophy. There is a general group (the Science Group) and in addition seven specialist study groups (Ethical Dilemmas, Geology – Past and Present, History of Transport, Industrial History, Our Universe, Philosophy, Science Discussion), in which talks are given by members after researching a topic from as wide a variety of sources as possible: books, scientific papers and journals, newspapers, data from Government departments and agencies and, of course, the internet.

Please see attached document for the above specialist Study Groups.
