During the Middle Ages, calligraphic letters became embellished to the form of high art. Illuminators copied books and manuscripts, and included borders and illustrations that were very ornate and highly stylized. Dyes and inks came from far away lands - typical colors were red, gold and blue. The Book of Kells in Dublin, Ireland exemplifies the height of illuminated letters during the early Middle Ages.
In this lesson's modern example, Shelby M., designed a decorative capital 'L' in high contrast and simple block lettering. The art was done in watercolor, scanned, and then Artistic Effects were added using PhotoshopElements by Adobe. The clean lines and easily identified letter 'L' make it an ideal style for a children's learning alphabet.
