Uni Dragons

Who We Are

Uni Dragons is a dragon boating club based in Canberra consisting mostly of tertiary students (don't have to be one to join) from the ACT region. Our aim is to provide a fun team environment, a way to meet new people, fitness and healthy competition. We enter local regattas, but have options to knock on interstate and, possibly, international doors. Founded in 2009, we are a social club with competitive aspirations. In 2011, at the first ever Australian University Dragon Boat Championships the Uni Dragon - ANU team walked away with 3 Golds, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze - making us the best University team in Australia. Whatever your fitness level or experience, we have a paddle, a seat, and a boat full of welcoming hearts for you. If you would like to join, just come along to one of our trainings and say hi, or send us an e-mail at unidragons.canberra@gmail.com. Dragon Boat Racing

Dragon boat racing originated in China over 2000 years ago. While competition has taken place annually for more than 20 centuries as part of folk ritual, it emerged in modern times as an international sport in Hong Kong in 1976. For competition events, dragon boats are generally rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails. Dragon boat racing is an aquatic sport in which a twelve metre long canoe-like boat, enough to sit twenty (or ten) people (two abreast) along with a sweep to steer the boat and a drummer, is paddled over a course of 200, 500, or 2000 metres in length. Competitions are usually divided into separate categories depending on the mix of gender and age of the paddlers.

In Canberra, the governing body for dragon boat racing is the Canberra Dragon Boat Association (CDBA), which is a member of the Australian Dragon Boat Federation (AusDBF), which in turn is a member of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF).
