The Gambia is located in West Africa and bordered to the north, east and south by Senegal. The country is a narrow strip of land of about 10,500 square kilimetres with a population of 1.4 million people. The Gambia gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1965 and became a Republic in 1970. THE GAMBIA NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR UNESCO. The Gambia became a member of UNESCO in 1973. The National Commission for UNESCO (NATCOM) was later established in 1983 to function as a liaison between the government and UNESCO as well as to ensure full and effective participation in multisectoral activities. The NATCOM secretariat also co-ordinates ISESCO programmes in the country. Members of the commission are appointed from various Departments of State, institutions and NGOs working in UNESCO's field of competence. The Secretary General is head of the secretariat and secretary of the commission.
