Welcome to Uncommon Classes!

Nearly everyone has something that especially interests them... something that really piques their curiosity!  Sometimes it's easy to find out what you want to know about your topic of interest, and other times, you may not know where to begin.

Perhaps it's not your interest, but your child's interest that you're trying to feed. You may have a child or teen who is fascinated by rockets, or amazed by gorillas, or begging to know more about Spain.  You may not know where or how their interest began, but they are peppering you with questions for which you do not have the answer.  I'm here to help.

I design courses based on individual interests.  By working closely with the student and/or their parent, I create lessons designed to help them find the answers they are seeking.  The key words here are "to help them find the answers they are seeking."  I provide beginning information, then I guide them to add to that information through their own endeavors.  I provide ideas for hands-on activities, projects, games, music, art, field trips and more.  These courses do not fill them with facts, but instead they provide the student with the tools to find most of the answers on their own.  Real learning requires more than just reading about a topic, and then answering some questions on what was read.  Real learning takes place when there are real experiences to bring that topic to life!

Why are these classes uncommon?

  1. Each class is customized to meet that specific student's needs and interests.
  2. Students work at their own pace.
  3. Each class is designed for serious learning, but also, to be enjoyable and inspiring.
  4. Each class incorporates that specific student's preferred learning style, to the greatest degree possible.
  5. Families may choose from a structured or non-structured format.
  6. Grades and tests are optional.
  7. Completing more work, showing more initiative equals more credit.

These classes are designed to inspire students to want to learn.

How are these classes presented?

Each lesson will be sent via email. The lessons will utilize a variety of media in presenting the material: audio, video, slideshows, photos, online text, games, wikis and other Internet tools, all of which have been checked and verified to be safe and suitable for students.

What if students have questions about their lessons?

There are bound to be questions. I can be contacted via email, phone, Skype or Google Talk. You will receive all contact information upon enrollment.

For homeschoolers...

All of the classes can be taken for the equivalent of high school credit. Upon successful completion of a course, the student will receive a printable certificate that indicates the equivalent high school credit the student has earned. It will then be up to the homeschool administrator, in most cases, the parent(s) to determine if they want to use that credit on their student's transcript.
