ECRC Meet #3 in Woodbridge, NJ

NEWS!

September 7th:
Welcome back to school!  We are very excited to announce a new season for the UMass Lowell racquetball team.  This season is setting up to be our best.  We have a full team of veterans leading the way into the season and a strong showing of new talent.  We'll be starting practice this week, Tues and Thurs 7-9pm.  As always, we strive to be excellent in all we do hope to make UML proud!

April 1st-April 4th:
We're back from Intercollegiate Nationals 09' where there was an overwhelming 46 universities and 332 participants from all over the country. Besides the weather being a perfect 75 degrees plus with the sun always shining, the tournament was just as enjoyable. We only had three to fly out and represent UML: Matthew Scanio, Ben Moultan, and Jeff Glynn. All three brought home medals as they finished in style:

Matthew Scanio - 3rd Place Men's Singles A/B Skill Division
Jeff Glynn - 3rd Place Men's Singles C/D Skill Division
Ben Moultan/Jeff Glynn - 3rd Place Men's Doubles B Skill Division

February 20th-22nd:
We're back from Regionals 09' and we finished in style! Regionals brought a competitive crowd and UML held their own and finished overall in the regular season in 2nd place for Men's scoring out of 30 Univeristies and 2nd place for Men's & Women's Combined scoring out of 16 Universities. We brought back two trophies for our hard work and efforts to store in the show case at the UML's Campus Recreation Center. Thanks to our team leader, Chris Collette, for bringing us this far. I know for certain 2 years ago we could not make it this far as a club team. Chris has put in countless hours that just isn't ackowledged or recognized and our thanks go out to him. -Matthew Scanio

-As for the team, Congrats on the strong finishes:

Matthew Scanio - Men's 2 Runner-Up

Jeffrey Glynn - Men's 3 Semi-Finalist

Joseph Nickerson/Cecil Joseph - Men's 2 Semi-Finalist

Jeffrey Glynn/Ben Moulton - Men's 3 Runner-Up

Justin Parechanian/Jonathan Rebelo - Men's 4 Semi-Finalist

February 4th:
This weekend UML Racquetball traveled to Penn State in State College, Pennsylvania and competed in our 4th and final tournament of the regular season.  This tournament was more difficult due to lower attendance by the team and it showed in the results.  Overall, however, the team pulled through and did well in tough divisions.

From this point forward, we can look forward to Regionals later this month and Nationals down the road!

Special Congrats to the following player with a strong finish at Penn State:

Ben Moulton - Semi's Men's 3

For those who are new to the team, and do not know Brad Schugardt, he is one of two alumni of the UMASS Lowell Racquetball Team. (More information about him under the Alumni section.) But for those who do know him, he and his wife Jessica just had a baby girl! Resources tell me her name is Zoey, and she was born 21 inches long, at 7 lbs. 10 ounces. Congratulations to Brad and Jessica, and good luck to them!

October 6th:
We're BACK!!!   Allentown went extremely well for the whole team.  I'd especially like to point out the following people for their placements:

Jeff Glynn/Matt Hutchinson - 1st Place Men's 4 Doubles
Matt Scanio/Ryan Dandeneau - 2nd Place Men's 3 Doubles
Artie Schofield/Joe Nickerson - Semi's Men's 1 Doubles

The weekend started well when we arrived Thursday night after a 7 hour drive.  A good's night sleep later and we were undefeated for almost half the day on Friday.  After beating up on the ECRC Friday, we started delivering the pain in doubles too.  Going into Saturday we started with the later rounds and almost everyone continued to win and we could see that a strong finish was in sight.  There was a point where we were looking to possibly take 1st in 3 singles divisions and 3 doubles divisions.  Some strong matches into Saturday night and we had realized that all we had left were finals and a couple semi's on Saturday.  Sunday came and so did our last semi's and championship matches.  Ryan won in awesome fashion.  Chris and Hutch fought well with 2nd place finishes.  Doubles was just as strong as we finished the weekend.

Congratulations to everyone this weekend!

September 28th:
4 days til Allentown! - Looks like we have 10 going to Allentown.  This is normally a smaller group to go but we're pumped nonetheless!
Here's the team:  Artie - Joe - Cecil - Chris - Scanio - Hutch - Jeff - Ryan - Miles and our girls team will be represented by Ashley.

We're excited to get the season started and make our way towards a men's trophy, and with a strong women's team at the tournaments, and overall trophy as well!

September 2nd:
Outside the Rec. Center- Scanio and Big Joe sat out in the sun for 3 hours recruiting people for the Racquetball Team. We had 18 people sign up, of which maybe 8 will stick with the team, hopefully. The day went better than expected; we had many people interested in learning about Racquetball, and even more interested to know that UML actually had a team. We talked with a lot of incoming Freshman, and I think we can expect a few new additions to the ladder.
On the courts (1st "Practice")- We had members of the team there for our normal practice, and a few of the people who signed up earlier outside the Rec Center. The other 5 that showed up all show great potential, each with their own strengths. They enjoyed playing the game, especially when the rules were explained professionally by the members of the team, and also seemed to enjoy the "wooping" Big Joe was handing out. (And by the way, one of the new comers almost had Big Joe beat to a game to 7...needless to say, Big Joe had to play dirty to get out of trouble with a 7-5 win.)   :)   These 5 will hopefully be the new addition to the team...

August 25th:

The team has a website!!  After our first season I decided that we ought to have some place online to meet and discuss . . . stuff :) Hopefully, this will also help us bring in new members.  For those of you who don't know who I am.  I'm Chris, the team president and head coach.  You can read more about me in the Chris and Big Joe section.
