Could a doctor's subconcious biases affect your cancer treatment? Join the IHI Open School for a discussion with Jennifer Griggs, MD, MPH, a leading researcher on medical decision-making and breast cancer. She will describe how heuristics, or cognitive shortcuts, positively and negatively impact decision-making and the factors that increase physicians' use of heuristics. Using specific examples from her own research, Dr. Griggs will demonstrate the effect of heuristics on breast cancer care. Speaker: Jennifer Griggs, MD, MPH

Excellence in Health Care Leadership: Awareness and Prevention of Medical Errors from a Patient Perspective Thursday March 24th from 5:30-7:00pm, School of Public Health, Room 1680 Please join the IHI Open School and Griffith Leadership Center in welcoming James Padilla, board member of Consumers Advancing Patient Safety (CAPS). James will share the story of his son's death as a result of medical errors, allowing for discussion of prevention measures and the root causes that led to the error. In addition, Mr. Padilla will share how administrator’s response to medical events can have a big impact. All students and faculty welcome. Registration is required: Patient Event
What Are High Reliability Organizations? Monday March 28th from 6:00-7:00pm, Ross School of Business, Room 1210 Professor Kathleen Sutcliffe (Ross School of Business) will be discussing High Reliability Organizations (HRO), and how this concept applies in health care. Professor Sutcliffe is a pioneer in the area of organizational adaptability, reliability and resilience. She, along with Professor Weick, created the concept of HRO, an idea that is being used by numerous health systems to improve quality. This event is being hosted by the University of Michigan IHI Open School chapter, and we have invited chapters from around the world to join us virtually.
Application of HRO Concepts in a Hospital - Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Wednesday April 14th from 12:00-1:00pm, virtual meeting via WebEx, physical location TBD Dr. Stephen Muething from Cincinnati Children's will be discussing his hospital's quest towards becoming an HRO, including the successes and lessons learned. This event will be broadcast using WebEx, and will be available via recording afterward. A physical location at U of M will be provided as well (location TBD). This event is being hosted by the University of Michigan IHI Open School chapter, and we have invited chapters from around the world to join us virtually.
Lean Workshop #2 with Lean Coach Jackie Lapinski Value Stream Mapping Jackie Lapinski, Lean Coach at UMHS, will be teaching this workshop on value stream mapping. We will discuss the concept of value stream mapping, and we will learn how to design current state maps and future state maps. The format will be both didactic and interactive. The session will be arranged so that students that need to leave at 1:00pm can do so. Come learn this important Lean tool and be prepared for your interviews, internships and jobs!

Introductory Lean Workshop with Dr. Jack Billi Dr. Jack Billi, head of the Michigan Quality System at UMHS, will be starting our Lean workshop series with an overview of Lean concepts. This initial meeting will be followed by hands-on workshops taught by UMHS Lean coaches on later dates, which will teach tools including value stream mapping, 5S and A3s. The meeting with Dr. Billi is open to all students and faculty (follow up workshops will be offered to members only). Come learn this important tool in system improvement and patient safety, and be prepared for interviews and internships!

The film is
hosted and narrated by Dennis Quaid. Following the near-death experience of his
infant twins resulting from a medication error, he has initiated a call to
action for health care leaders to invest in patient safety. Each story opens
with a challenge and then tells how caregivers overcome such challenges with
practices that everyone can adopt. The objective is to inspire the audience to
act in their own communities or at their own hospitals.

Clinical Session I: Medication Errors
What happens when a clinician is involved in a medication error? How can this happen - we'll go through the process. What can or should management do? What tools do you have to unearth systems, cultural, personal, other failures? For all involved and interested in clinical care: leadership, management, delivery, planning, design, finance... come join the discussion as clinician, supporting staff, researcher or administrator who might be involved and learn what is involved with medical errors.

Quality Month Event at UMHS The Quality Month storyboard and recognition event has been scheduled for October 5-6, 2010. Storyboards will be on display in the Towsley Lobby on Tuesday Oct 5th from 11-5 and likely there will be scheduled events in Dow Auditorium. On Wednesday October 6, IHIOS is invited to talk with team members as they man their boards to tell their stories from 11-1 in the Dow Lobby.
IHI Open School Speaker Series welcomes Rick Boothman
The IHI Open School speaker series welcomes Richard Boothman, J.D., Risk Management at UMHS. Mr. Boothman will be discussing transparency in the face of medical errors. Refreshments will be provided. Also, IHIOS members can come early for a meet and greet with Rick at 5;30!
