My informants tell me that the wind died and it was not possible to run a
Final at the event being sailed at Oxford Sailing Club, but it was still
possible to determine a winner. Sounds like light winds made it a bit of a frustrating day. An informant could tell me that
the winner of the Youth Event, sailed in Fireflies was West Kirby.
Second was Magdalen/OSC and third Sevenoaks. Unfortunately all they
could recall about the Junior event was that all the teams had silly
names and that "Charlies Angels" were up there somewhere. However,
anotheer informant tells me that the Junior winners were some Oppy Squad
Sailors under the name of "Bluefin". When posted by the RYA the results should be accessible through the following link:- http://www.sailracer.org/events/v2-resultsloader.asp?eventid=58028&results=/sail100/58028.html |

Racing was good at Oxford on the Saturday with 108 Races sailed in the Fireflies and 120 in the Fevas in a NE'ly breeze.
Amongst the Youth (Under 19) sailing Fireflies, it looks as if West
Kirby are doing well with 10 wins, whilst Magdalen A and RGS are known
to be on 9 wins. Sevenoaks may be on a similar number of wins but I have
not been able to locate any official results and this information comes
via some interested parties. Unfortunately, we don't have any
information on the Juniors.
RYA will be posting the results at:-

The Twisted Tube Random Pairs team racing championship was sailed at
Spinnaker on Saturday, 9 th
October. There were 45 races in the day and Rob & Mel
Sherrington, strong supporters of the event, retaining their title
with 13 wins out of 15.
Random pairs Team Racing is the most democratic form of team racing. In
three boat team racing, you can be the best sailor and the best team
racer in a race but the better all round team generally wins. Random
pairs allows total novices to race with and against World
Championship sailors in two boat team racing.
Your team mate and opposition are randomly chosen. You have to work with
a team mate you may never have met before to try to win a race. It is
also fantastic in introducing all members of the fleet to each other;
you need to speak to your team mate before, during and, hopefully,
after a race. The other great aspect of the event is that the best
team racers adjust the level of their sailing to the quality of the
opposition; if you are given a really hard time, consider it a
compliment.
At
Spinnaker Lake on 9 October there was a good, if shifty, breeze from
the East to North East and 12 crews competed for the Twisted Tube.
Defending Champions Rob & Mel Sherrington were faced with fellow
Spinnaker Team Racers Roger Morris & Jo Findlay and John
Greenland who had finished just behind Rob & Mel at the Firefly
Nationals. There were also four Southampton Uni Crews.
Fully
umpired racing took place in a variable breeze from 2-4 with the wind
flicking between NE and E. These conditions gave plenty of hope for
competitors who were behind to hope for a change of fortune all the
way to the line. In random pairs there is always an element of luck
or bad luck in who you are paired with and the regular Firefly
sailors benefited from better sails and lighter boats than the Uni
sailors.
In
a competitive, occasionally noisy, but always good natured day of
team racing, Rob & Mel Sherrington retained their title with 13
wins out of 15 from Roger Morris and Jo Findlay with 11 wins and John
Greenland with 9 wins.
Top six
Rob & Mel Sherrington 13 wins
Roger Morris and Jo Findlay 11 wins
John Greenland 9 wins
Stephen Tiernan 9 wins
Steven Greaves 8 wins
Josh Rumbol 7 wins

Tom Clay writes - Come to Spinnaker on Sat 9 October for the
Twisted Tube Random Pairs team racing. All you need is a Firefly and a crew. At
the briefing at 10.00 am you will be given a schedule of races for the day and
in every race you will have a randomly chosen team mate and randomly chosen
opposition. You could find yourself in one race sailing with a Wilson trophy winner and in the next with a
Spinnaker youngster. It is a fantastic fun day with briefing at 10.00am and
first race planned for 10.30am. Stay on for the Firefly Inland Championships on
Sunday 10th. |

The West Kirby Hawks were runners-up
in the Hinman Trophy (the US Team Racing Championship) to the NYYC Silver Panda
team. The event was hosted by the Seattle Yacht Club. The Hawks
(Dom Johnson/ Debs Steele, Andy Cornah/Hamish Walker, Ben Field/Tom Foster)
reached the finals but lost on count back, by one point, after the tie brake was
abandoned due to lack of wind. They had, however, beaten Silver Panda in their
last encounter. Further information and good video footage at http://championships.ussailing.org/Adult/USTRChampionship.htm |

The Team Racing Season has begun, as usual, with the National School Sailing Association Championships.
The event took place at Upton Warren Centre, Worcestershire in Toppers. 32 Teams took part in a Wilson Swiss League which comprised 177 races. This qualified four teams for the Semi-finals, which both went to three races with Northamptonshire B beating Kent B and Magdalen beating Hertfordshire Youth Dinghy Racing Assn.
The Final was held in very light conditions. Magdalen won the first race but could not hold off the lighter and younger Northamptonshire B Team who won the next two races, to take the overall championship trophy and the under 16 trophy. Winners of the Lancashire Plate for best improvement– Worcester A.

The latest version of the UKTRA Standard Sailing Instructions are now available for download. The file name remains the same but when you open the document it is dated September 2010. The changes are :-** New SI 1.4 to correct a flaw in appendix
D
** New SI 9.1 to require boats to display a red
flag for ALL requests for redress, not only for breakdowns as previously.
This confirms what actually happens in practice.
** Amended SI 9.2 for clarification and
consistency.
** Deletion of the unloved SI option to limit
redress for breakdowns.
