Project Remix Day 5 - THE END!

posted Apr 22, 2010 6:50 PM by Band Boosters   [ updated Apr 22, 2010 7:57 PM ]

Today you will create an Audio CD of your GarageBand project so that it can be played on any CD player. You will also trade CDs with someone in class and critique their project. When you're ready, you will be given a CD from your teacher. Please print your First & Last name clearly on the CD.

You can use the first 15 minutes of class to put any finishing touches on your project that you need. After that time, you should Burn your project to CD (Step A) and then Share your project with a partner of your choice (Step B) and complete the Day 5 Discussion Item.

A. Saving your Final Project as an Audio Recording
1. Connect to the uhsband Public iDisk server. Click this link for a reminder of how to do this.

2. Open your completed project in GarageBand. Your file might be saved locally on the your computer's hard drive, or you might have saved it on the uhsband Public iDisk server.

3. Make any final edits to your project and then select Burn Song to CD from the Share menu in GarageBand.

4. Insert your blank CD in the computer when prompted.

5. After you insert your CD, wait a few moments and then click the blue Burn button to continue.

6. After a minute or two your CD will be finished and the computer should automatically eject it. You can now quit GarageBand.

B. Sharing your Project & Doing a Critique.
1. Select a partner to trade CDs with.

2. Insert your partner's CD into your computer.

3. iTunes should automatically open. If it doesn't you can start the program yourself. A window may open like the one below. Select Cancel. If asked, you do NOT need to import the CD into iTunes.

4. Click the Play button in iTunes and listen to your partner's Remix Project several times, and then complete the Day 5 Discussion Item.

5. When you're finished, eject your partners CD by clicking the eject button in iTunes, or by pressing the eject button on the keyboard. Please return the CD to your partner.

6. When you get your CD back from your partner, make sure your name is printed on it and then turn the CD in to your teacher.

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE FINISHED PROJECT REMIX!!!

Project Remix Day 4

posted Apr 20, 2010 11:24 PM by Band Boosters   [ updated Apr 21, 2010 12:31 AM ]

It's time to finish Project Remix! And now a brief message from your teacher...

DON'T FORGET TO USE HEADPHONES!

Today is another work day. By now you should have imported any MIDI files you need from Noteflight into GarageBand. If you haven't done so already, you should also make your final decisions as it relates to the other tracks you're adding to your project. The other tracks could be your voice recorded, your instrument recorded, loops, or any of the software instruments. If you already have your project setup the way you like it, you should spend your time putting some polish on it. You could alter the way individual tracks sound by editing the reverb and effects settings. Or you could add dynamics or panning to individual tracks. Finally... double check the assignment details listed on Day 1 Assignments to be sure your project meets all the requirements.

Be sure to use your time wisely and save your work often. If you have questions about using GarageBand, you can check theonline help from Apple.

SAVING & OPENING FILES
There's been some confusion about finding and saving files. The policy up to this point has been to save your work to the Public iDisk folder. Well it seems this isn't the best plan because it causes GarageBand to slow down, and because it's saving over the internet, it tends to be kind of slow. So here's my new recommendation...

SAVE YOUR WORK LOCALLY
In other words, save your GarageBand files to the computer's hard drive (Finder / Student / Music). Then... after you're finished working in GarageBand, you can drag your file from the local hard drive to your folder on the Public iDisk. I realize this is a change, but it should be for the better. This does mean that you always need to use the same computer when you're working in the lab.

GETTING HELP
Check theAnnouncements for help accessing your folder on the uhsband Public iDisk. There's also help listed there for saving a MIDI file from Noteflight.

TURNING IN YOUR COMPLETED ASSIGNMENT
When you're finished with your Project Remix, quit GarageBand and drag your file from the hard drive (or wherever you have it saved) to your folder on the Public iDisk. I will be checking for your completed assignment in that folder. I will NOT go searching through all the computers in the lab or the StudentDocs NAS to find your assignment. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure your completed file gets saved in the correct location.

FINISH THE DISCUSSION ITEMS TODAY
Don't forget to complete the Day 4 Discussion Item. And some of you still need to complete the Discussion Items for Day 3 and Day 2. ALL DISCUSSION ITEMS MUST BE FINISHED BY THE END OF CLASS TODAY!

Project Remix Day 2

posted Apr 13, 2010 2:13 PM by Band Boosters   [ updated Apr 13, 2010 8:32 PM ]

Today you will learn about MIDI, and learn how to enter a musical motif in Noteflight and export it as a MIDI file that can be manipulated in GarageBand.

PART A - What is MIDI?
What does MIDI stand for? What makes it useful? How is it similar or different from an audio recording (WAV audio file)? How will you use MIDI for your Project Remix?
Do 5 or 10 minutes of research online and report your findings in today's online discussion. You may find that there is too much information to digest in 5 or 10 minutes. So do your best to get the information you need as it relates to your project, and try not to get bogged down by the finer details. Here's a starting point from PC Magazine.

PART B - Using a MIDI file in GarageBand
If you haven't already done so, please create a free account with Noteflight (You can also use MuseScore for this part of the project, but as a class we will focus on Noteflight). Once you create a Noteflight account, you can login and an enter your musical motifs on digital staff paper. From there you can export your motif as a MIDI file from Noteflight and use it in your project in GarageBand.

Consider the following questions and include your thoughts in today's online discussion item.
  • What are the advantages of saving your musical motif as a MIDI file versus a WAV audio file?
  • What are the limitations of using a MIDI file?

PART C - Add your musical motif to GarageBand and begin the "remix" process.
What does it mean to "remix" a piece of music? What will make your music sound good?
As you're creating your "remix" consider these questions, and report your thoughts in today's online discussion. Look for ways to make your music sound different from the original composition your using, but similar enough that the motif can be still recognized.

Here are some suggestions for altering your musical motif:
  • Alter the rhythm of the motif (make it longer, slower, syncopated, etc.)
  • Change the pitches in the motif (transpose the motif, major to minor, invert the motif, etc.)
  • Layer the motif (stack multiple tracks of the motif on top of itself)
  • Gradually introduce new elements to the motif (over time add new notes to the motif, or rests, etc.)

Get to work and use your time wisely!
You have 3 class periods remaining to complete your project.

Project Remix Day 1

posted Apr 11, 2010 6:45 PM by Band Boosters   [ updated Apr 11, 2010 11:41 PM ]

Project Remix Assignment Details:
The goal of Project Remix is to create an original piece of music based upon motifs or excerpts from your Symphonic Band music. You may also use other sources, but you must have at least ONE reference to a Symphonic Band piece in your final project. The Remix must have at least 3 tracks (solo, bass, drums, etc.) and be at least 30 seconds in length. Quality is more important than quantity! Your project will be graded upon your originality/creativity/appeal and your ability to adhere to the assignment instructions. You will also receive a daily contribution grade based upon your response to the daily discussion item. You will have 4 days in the computer lab to complete this assignment. You may work on the project outside of class, but you are still expected to use class-time wisely.

Day 1 Assignment:

Today you will explore GarageBand, MuseScore, Noteflight, and any other music program that will help you create your Remix Project. There are no set requirements for using these programs, but you may find these tools are very well suited for this assignment. If you are familiar with other free music tools, please make a note of this in your discussion response and share them with Mr. Hall. Before you dive in, please create your student folder in the uhsband public iDisk folder. Instructions on how to do this are posted in the announcements. Please raise your hand if you need help. Thanks and have fun!

Project Remix Tools:

GarageBand - Part of the Apple iLife Suite of applications, this program is installed on all of the computers in the Mac lab. Online tutorials are available here. The MIDI keyboard controllers DO work with this program.

Noteflight - Online Music Notation Tool. Free, but registration is required. The MIDI keyboard controllers do NOT work with this program.

MuseScore - Free music composition & notation software. This program is installed on the computers in the Mac lab. You can download and use this program for free on your home computer. An online Handbook is available here. The MIDI keyboard controllers DO work with this program.
