OverviewThe "tracks" were instituted by the Botany Department to make sure that a student's graduate program is a reasonable balance between breadth in botany and depth within a specific discipline. We interpret the "requirements" in each track as "proficiencies" in the spirit that you will have mastered the specific proficiency items by the time you complete your degree. This means, for example, that you are not required to take a specific course, but instead, will be able to demonstrate that your are proficient in the materials covered in that course. ProcedureYou must declare which track you intend to follow when you enter the Botany Graduate Program. You will be assigned an advisor and several other faculty members to form an interim committee. This committee will discuss the track proficiencies and you will have an opportunity to indicate how your prior experience (courses, employment, etc.) demonstrates that you are proficient in the specific track proficiencies. You and your interim committee will develop a list of specific proficiencies that accomplish the track objectives within the context of your learning styles. This information will be entered into your Progress Form. Later, your permanent committee will review your track proficiencies and progress that you have made in gaining specific proficiencies. This committee may further modify the track proficiencies. Through this process, you should keep your advisor and committee well informed of your progress so that your Progress Form is up-to-date. All track proficiencies noted on your Progress Form must be completed, as certified by your advisor and permanent committee, before you can graduate. Proficiency TracksPlease note that these track specifications are all in DRAFT and subject to revision.
