The Photon

Photos from Solar 2008

The Photon is an Electrical Assist Pedal Power Zero Emission Vehicle.  The Photon is a tad pole recumbent tricycle

with 6 solar panels mounted on top of it.  The solar panels collect the photovoltaic energy from the sun and convert it into direct current (DC) electrical energy which charges a 240 volt Lithium Iron-Phosphate battery which in turn powers a 2.5 horse power hub motor which drives the photon electrically.

The Photon has a maximum range of 25 miles and a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour.  A full charge requires approximately 8 sun hours, but it can be charged from a 120 volt electrical outlet in just 5 hours.

The initial concept stages began in the spring of 2007 and the final incarnation of the Photon (Photon Beta: shown) completed in the spring of 2008 with the Photon Alpha phase in between.  The project leader for the Photon has always been Nate Mitten and I credit him with getting the Photon to where it is today.

The photon houses several accessories.  These include headlights, urning signals, storage, DC outlet, speedometer and an ipod connection with speakers included.
