Service Opportunity

posted ‎‎Oct 12, 2009 10:54 PM‎‎ by Zachary Lindsey   [ updated ‎‎Oct 15, 2009 3:59 PM‎‎ by Annea Hapciu ]

Hello MUN

Today I wanted to request your assistance in a service opportunity. The Spook-O-Ree is an event which I have been involved in for the past four years. It is an amazing time. Each Year thousands of cub scouts come to Camp Craig on the 17th and 24th of October-so it's coming up soon. The camp provides lots of different activities for the cub scouts (average age 7-10) to celebrate Halloween. The Ree is a story telling, trick or treating in the Fort, a haunted castle, a haunted trail, a hayride, concessions, a straw maze, and a Halloween themed carnival with prizes. The event which hosts thousands of cub scouts each year is run and organized by an all volunteer staff. This year we are expecting more scouts than ever so we need to bring in more volunteers. I really think this is a rewarding and fun way to help out cub scouts and their families. So if any of you are available to help on those Saturdays I would really appreciate it. Staff is needed from 2pm to 10pm both Saturdays.

If you can help out and/or drive to the Spook-O-Ree, this year please let me know at UDMUN@notes.udayton.edu. If you are not able to drive, I can arrange transportation. The Camp is located in Loveland Ohio, about 45minutes south of Dayton.

Service

posted ‎‎Oct 2, 2009 2:05 PM‎‎ by Zachary Lindsey

Hey everyone, at tonight's meeting Lisa briefly mentioned that we had some ideas for service for this year.  Service is not something that MUN has traditionally done but we'd like to expand into this area.  Right now, we're kicking around the idea of possibly making service hours mandatory, but service activities you did with other clubs, organizations, or fraternities would count towards MUN service.  Just e-mail me what you've done and I'll keep a record of it.

Now, some service opportunities we've talked about doing as a club include: Spookaree at Camp Friedlander in Cincinnati.  This event takes place either Saturday 17 October, or Saturday 24 October from 2-8PM both days.  If people are interested in doing this, or would like more information please e-mail Lisa, Zach, or myself.  The 1st official service opportunity I have planned is our club participating in the Trick or Treat for UNICEF fundraiser.  I have ordered materials(10 collection boxes along with stickers and other things), I'll keep you posted and when they arrive we can iron out the details for how we're going to raise money for UNICEF.

Sorry for the really long e-mail, but I wasn't able to be at the start of the meeting when we went over stuff so I figured this would be the best way to tell everyone.  If anyone has any ideas for service please let me know! And please keep me posted on what service activities you guys do throughout the semester!

Second MUN Simulation!!

posted ‎‎Sep 26, 2009 1:31 PM‎‎ by Zachary Lindsey

As promised at our last meeting we will be starting our second simulation this Thursday at our meeting in KU 331at 6:30. For this sim well start to get into practicing/learning parliamentary procedure for the United Nations. so as a guide to help you i have uploaded several thingson the team File. the first is the Rules of procedure for our high school conference. the second is a paper giving the background information on our sim. And the third is the transcript of the brifing given to the Security Council by the UN Special Envoy. so here are some details about the game for Thursday:

The Board: it is the present time in the United Nations Security Council. Today the council will be resuming discussions of the current Middle-East situation including the Palestinian Question. In accordance with Security Council rules the states of Israel, and Lebanon (representing the interests of the Palestinian Authority) have been allowed seats at the council table as observing nations with rights to speak, but no vote.

The Stakes:  The decision of the Security council on this matter may be highly valuable in coming negotiations for an end to this intractable conflict. as momentum is building for peace we must keep in mind that we have seen this momentum many times before only to see it squandered by poor diplomacy or a lack of political will. Will this be the time that the international community will finnaly come together to end this conflict.

Words of Wisdom: delegates should become familiar with the high school conference procedure over the coming week. on Thursday we will divide into teams. you will have 20 minutes to come up with a position and your strategy. after the 20 minutes is up the the Council will connive to hear opening statements from the states participating. speakers time will be set at one minute. be sure to read over the articals attached here but dont worry about outside research. A time freeze will be in effect as of 10:31am on September 17th.

DONT PANIC: you are not expected to know everything or understand everything. the purpose of this is to begin learning the UN system. New Members will be on teams with a Returning member, Dan and myself will also be there as "coaches" to answer any questions and help you form your positions. Again your not expected to know it all.

ASK QUESTIONS: Again the purpose is to learn and familiarize yourself with the UN system. if you have questions between now and Thursday, email UDMUN@notes.udayton.edu. if you have questions at the meeting ASK, there are no dumb questions. Again your not supposed to know it all, this is to learn.
