About the Professor

Matthew T. Herbst is Director of the Making of the Modern World Program at UC San Diego (E. Roosevelt College) where he teaches world history, Byzantium, and seminars on religious themes.   He is passionate about undergraduate education, earning the Outstanding Faculty Award at UCSD-ERC in 2009.  Dedicated to internationalizing the undergraduate experience, Professor Herbst designed and led programs abroad in Paris and Istanbul (2008-2010) and recruited faculty for programs in Amsterdam, Athens, and Berlin.  He received the Partners-in-International Education Award from the UCSD International Center in 2008 and an appointment as Faculty Fellow to the UCSD International House in 2010.   Prof. Herbst received his Ph.D. and M.A. in History from the University of Michigan where he specialized in Byzantium, with sub-fields in Rome, Medieval West and Muslim Near East (to 1500), and his B.A. from Binghamton University in NY where he studied History, Greek, and Latin.
