¡Sí se puede!

Research on Participation in the Immigration Rallies held May 1, 2006

Welcome to the ¡Sí se puede! web site, where we are storing/updating research on the May 1st immigration ralies conducted by Michael Chwe and his students in UCLA's Political Science 269, a course on Social Movements.

On May 1, 2006, Michael Chwe, his students, and a few volunteers surveyed participants at three immigration rallies in Los Angeles.* Originally interested in what motivates participation in social movements following discussions in a graduate seminar, Chwe et al saw the May 1st rallies as an opportunity to conduct real-time research on participation in social movements.

The survey used was created in English and translated into Spanish, Korean, and Tagalog. A Portable Document File (PDF) of the survey can be found here.

*Also included in the analysis as a pilot/control are surveys of attendees to the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.
