Alpha Phi Omega is a national co-ed community service fraternity. Our cardinal principles are Leadership, Friendship, and Service. For over seventy-five years, we have set the standard for college campus-based volunteerism. Our goal is not only to perform service but also to raise awareness of the importance of service and the opportunities for service both on campus and in the community. We also strive to develop a spirit of fellowship among our members. Brothers of Alpha Phi Omega develop a strong sense of community through participation in both service projects and social activities. The Gamma Sigma chapter at the University of Chicago was re-founded in 1997 and has since established itself as one of the pre-eminent chapters in section 51. We have been recognized and rewarded for our diligence and consistent service to the community of south side Chicago. In October of 2008, we also received the Joseph Scanlon Membership Award for 15% increase in chapter membership. As a community service organization at one of the premier academic institutions in the nation, Gamma Sigma tries to encourage its members to be cognizant that while developing the life of the mind is a noble ideal, it is equally valuable to remain mindful of the real world. Members of APO are required to do at least 15 hours of service every quarter, and at least 2 events must be from the service calendar. Members must also participate in at least 2 fellowship events, which doesn't include weekly after-meeting dinners. Meetings are held every Sunday at 5:30 PM in the South Lounge (2nd floor of Reynold's Club). If you are interested in being part of APO, please email Meetra for more information. |
