Interested in Earning One Credit for Attending a Day-Long Seminar?
Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to consider attending the Division of Continuing Education seminars on "Less Lethal Weapons" and "Police Ethics and Corruption" which will be held during spring term. Both seminars have an option for earning one-credit hour for attending the day-long presentation and completing additional course work on the web. The Orange County Sheriff's Office is Hiring!

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is making a Recruiting Visit to UCF!
On Thursday, November 12, 2009 from 10:00am to 2:00 pm in the Pegasus Ballroom, the CIA will be answering questions and inviting students to interviews. There will also be an Information Session from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm in BA2 room 207 the same date. Those invited to interviews will meet with CIA representatives on November 13, 2009 on campus. The ACJS Corrections Section is announcing a competition for one $500 student travel award for this year's conference in San Diego. The travel award recognizes the need to bring more students to the ACJS convention that are writing papers, participating in panels, or are otherwise involved with corrections work.
Eligible candidates are graduate or undergraduate students who are presenting a corrections related paper at the conference or who have made substantial contributions to the corrections field either through their work or as volunteers.

Gubernational Fellows Program
Governor Charlie Crist has re-launched the Gubernational Fellows website and has invited college and university students to apply for the 2010-11 Gubernational Fellows program which allows university students the opportunity to gain firsthand, high-level experience and insight into how government operates while working alongside state government top staff for two semesters.
To be eligible for a Gubernational Fellowship, candidates should be enrolled at a Florida college or university as an upperclassman (junior or senior) or a graduate student. Applicants should exhibit strong leadership, written and oral communication skills, community activism and a desire to serve the people of Florida. Approximately 12 students from around the state will be selected based on a competitive application process.

UCF Book Festival

The Orange County Sheriff's Office is recruiting for a no-cost (sponsored) auxiliary academy class to be held in early 2010. Auxiliary academies are shortened police academies are shortened police academies, graduates have sworn law enforcement powers when working with fully-certified law enforcement officers. Auxiliary deputies with the Orange County Sheriff's Office are issued the same uniforms and equipment as full-time deputies and work as volunteers for the agency. Auxiliary deputies must perform a minimum of 16 hours of duty assignment each month including a reserve meeting and reserve training. Auxiliaries also must pass regular firearms qualifications and can be called for special assignments and emergencies. Auxiliaries also complete an extensive training program after the academy with the agency, and must complete this fiedl training program within two years of swearing-in. Exciting Job Opportunity
Academic Services for Student Athletes is hiring tutors for Criminal Justice students. Any current UCF student grad or undergraduate or recent graduate can tutor any course in which they earned a B or better. Preference is given to graduate students and undergraduates with more than 60 credit hours. Update of Systematic Reviews of Public Health Laws
Five systematic reviews of public health laws have been published in the "Task Force on Community Preventive Services" under the category "Preventing Excessive Alcohol Use." All five found the pertinent laws to be effective and the task force recommends their adoption. The reviews are:

It may seem too early to think about participating in a Criminal Justice Study Abroad class for next summer, but now is the time to get on the list! The Russian study abroad trip is already being planned, leaving Orlando in June 2010 and traveling to Moscow and Volgograd (was Stalingrad). We will be hosted by the Volgograd Law Academy which is a 5 year university that prepares the future Russian police investigators, forensic scientists, prosecutors and judges. The program includes excursions to historic and cultural sites, visits to Russian criminal justice and other government agencies, and classroom instruction from Russian professors and professionals. The cost is approximately $3,500 and includes: international round-trip airfare, train fare, all hotel accommodations, health insurance, excursions, and many meals. The course will be limited to 18 students. Child Protective Investigator Position Available
The Department of Children and Families will soon be hiring for our Child Protective Investigator Position in Brevard county with a starting salary of $34,829. This is professional work protecting children, working with families and conducting investigations of alleged abuse, abandonment, neglect or exploitation.

Honors in the Major (Criminal Justice and Legal Studies)
The Honors in the Major (HIM) Program is designed to encourage the best juniors and seniors to undertake original and independent work in their major field. Working one on one with a willing faculty member from their major department, eligible students will research, write, defend and publish and original Honors thesis that serves as the capstone product of their undergraduate career. This thesis is bound and archived in the university library and is available to researchers world wide through electronic databases.
To be eligible, students must have completed 60 hours of college credit and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the major and 3.2 for overall upper division course work. If accepted to the program, students enjoy the privileges of being a student in The Burnett Honors College. Some of these benefits include use of the Honors College computer laboratory, extended library check out privileges and access to the Honors Reading Room. Competitive scholarship money is also available.
Upon successful completion of the program, students earn the Honors in the Major distinction when graduating, including recognition at the elegant Honors graduation banquet where they are invested with an Honors medallion that is worn as part of their regalia at graduation. The designation of "honors in (subject area)" is noted on the student's University transcript and diploma. LAE Criminal Justice Pre-Professional Fraternity
Lambda Alpha Epsilon invites all Criminal Justice majors, minors and students interested in Criminal Justice to get involved in one of the most active criminal justice organizations anywhere. APS Criminal Justice Honor Society

The following are the requirements for Alpha Phi Sigma Members: Undergraduate students must maintain a minimum of 3.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale, a 3.2 GPA, on a 4.0 scale, in criminal justice courses and have completed a minimum of four courses within the criminal justice curriculum. The Honor Society is open to those with a declared criminal justice major or minor. Graduate students are required to maintain a minimum of 3.4 GPA in both Criminal Justice courses and overall courses, on a 4.0 scale. Students must have completed a minimum of four courses within the criminal justice curriculum.

PAD Legal Studies Pre-Professional Organization
Phi Alpha Delta is a professional fraternity geared to those people who want to enter the legal field. We are a co-ed fraternity open to all majors. We participate in a variety of activities, including those necessary for admission to law school such as: community service, leadership opportunities, law school visits, and introductions with the deans of admission. We also go to conventions, sit in on law school classes, compete in mock trial competitions, and have socials. Other benefits include: discounts off Blackstone and PowerScore LSAT Prep Classes, networking, and scholarships. To sign up for PAD, you can get an application in the Department of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies in HPA I (Health and Public Affairs) Room 311 or on our website. You do not need to attend all events or all meetings to join; you can participate as much or as little as you like.
