| Fionnuala Hickey | Vice Chairperson | A research fellow in the UCD Conway Institute. Fionnuala completed her PhD in Biochemistry in UCC in 2005. She has been working in UCD since 2007 and currently holds a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with the Irish Health Research Board. Her research focuses on diabetic nephropathy with a specific focus on the role of mitochondria. | | Gordon Cooke | Treasurer | I'm a postdoctoral researcher based in the Conway Institute in UCD. I completed my Ph.D. in 2004 in the Institute of Technology Tallaght after which I was awarded a Newman Scholarship by the Irish Lung Foundation and UCD. I'm currently researching the formation of biofilms by Pseudomonas in cystic fibrosis patients. | | Karen Power | Secretary | A bioinformatics postdoctoral researcher in the UCD Centre for Food Safety and Food-borne Zoonomics, Veterinary Sciences Centre. Karen finished her PhD in 2008 in the UCD Conway Institute and is currently working with next generation sequencing data of food-borne pathogens. | | Luis Alvarez | Chair | As a Conway postdoc, I am currently working on the role of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) producing enzymes in innate immunity. Among my current projects, I am looking into the processes involved in the infection of epithelial cells by Campylobacter Jejuni. My previous work on molecular cell imaging at the University of Paris-Sud allowed me to study the photophysic and structural effects of ROS on fluorescent proteins and their impact in quantitative live cell imaging techniques. | | Carlo Bidoia | Board Member | Carlo is working in the Centre for Research in Infectious Diseases (UCD), employed as postdoc. After a Master Degree in Biology and a Master Degree in Scientific Popularization in Padua-Italy, he achieved a PhD in Neuroscience in Verona-Italy. Then he moved to Molecular Biology applied to retroviruses. Recently, he moved in UCD-CRID, confident in the local high quality of research. | | Colette Fagan | Board Member | A postdoctoral researcher in the Bioresources Research Centre within the UCD School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine. Colette completed her PhD in 2007. Her current research interests are in the area of process analytical technology (PAT), and in particular the application of optical spectroscopy for the development of robust bioprocesses. | | Devrim Kilinc | Board Member | Devrim is a biomedical engineer who is interested in neuroscience. Following his PhD at Drexel University, Philadelphia, on in vitro axonal traumatic injury mechanisms, he moved to Neurobiology of Adaptive Processes Lab in Paris where he developed microfluidic cell culture systems. He recently moved to UCD Bionanosciences Lab to work on mechanical stimulation of axons. As the non-European member of the committee, Devrim will be working on minimizing the administrative problems faced by the UCD researchers who are foreigners in the EU. | | Erin Williams | Board Member | A postdoctoral researcher in the UCD Reproductive Biology Research Cluster within the UCD School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine, Erin completed her PhD in 2006. Her current research interests are in the area of female infertility in the days surrounding fertilisation, and in particular the effects of reproductive tract infections on fertility in ruminants. | | Julie Naughton | Board Member | Julie is a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Medicine and Medical Sciences. She completed her PhD on malaria in 2007. She is currently part of a SFI research cluster investigating bacterial infection of mucosal surfaces. | | Matthew Saunders | Board Member | Matt is a postdoctoral researcher in the UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science. He completed an MSc in Environmental Science and a PhD in Plant Ecophysiology at Trinity College Dublin and moved to University College Dublin in 2007. He is currently working on the COFORD funded Carbifor II project and is investigating the impacts of land use change and forest management on carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change mitigation. | | Remo Hugli | Board Member | Currently working in a research project on magnetism on the nanoscale and quantum spintronic systems in the School of Physics' Condensed Matter Theroy group, Remo has been at UCD earlier as an IRCSET post-doctoral fellow in mathematics. Since he obtained is Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Berne Switzerland, he has lectured and persued research at various institutions, including the University of California at Irvine, and Nanjing University, PRC. | | Aine McConnon | Board member | Aine is a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Population Science. Having completed her PhD in 2006 Aine is currently managing an FP7 project investigating food risk/benefit perceptions and communication across Europe. | | Kevin McCarthy | Board member | A postdoctoral researcher working in the CLARITY research centre, part of the School of Computer Science and Informatics. Kevin completed his PhD in 2008 and his research interests include recommender systems, human computer interaction and mobile technologies. |
