IONS-NA '09
Three of our officers attended the first OSA-sponsored IONS conference held on the North American continent. The 4-day event in Washington DC was full of fun and informative activities; from Congressional visits to tours of national labs to professional development talks to social events at UMD, IONS-NA was a great success and hopefully the beginning of a long tradition.
SWOSC '09
A group of intrepid souls from our student chapter traveled to Albuquerque, NM to help organize andparticipate in the 1st Annual Southwestern Optics Student Conference (SWOSC). The event was a big success, with more than 50 students attending from various universities. The highlights of the action-packed conference included a plenary speaker, tours to local optics companies, poster sessions, student talks, and a panel forum for discussing optics careers with an array of experts. Many thanks to the College of Optical Sciences, SPIE, OSA, and the University of New Mexico for their support in organizing this event. We look forward to hosting SWOSC '10 next year right here in Tucson!
Mount Lemmon Camping Trip In April, a crew of Optical Science students headed up Mount Lemmon for an evening of camping. Activities included hiking, rock climbing, making smore’s and verifying that there is indeed a lake on Mt. Lemmon ... with real live fish!
