Department of Defense 8570.1 provides guidance and procedures for the training, certification, and management of the DoD contractors and workforce who work in Information Assurance (IA) and Information Technology (IT). The people who are impacted by this include any full-time or part-time military service member, contractor, or local nationals with privileged access to a Department of Defense Information systems. These mandatory IT certifications are intended to produce IA personnel with the demonstrated ability to perform a baseline understanding of the fundamental IA principles and practices related to the functions of their assigned position. The United States military (DoD) requires these certifications because of national security. Certification helps validate your proven skills, experience and knowledge in today’s rapidly changing IT marketplace. The University of Arizona South provides both certification training and testing at its campus in Sierra Vista near Fort Huachuca. Obtaining these IT certifications definitely gives you 'one up' if applying for a government or contractor job. Most DoD IT and IA employees must now be certified!
Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) - If you have at least five years of experience in information security, CISSP® training and credentials should be your next career goal. The Microsoft Exam 70-680 counts towards the MCITP: Enterprise Administrator certification. Candidates for Microsoft Exam 70-680 support users in computing environments that use Microsoft Windows 7 as a desktop operating system in an enterprise environment. Candidates should have at least one year of experience in the IT field, as well as supporting any Windows client operating system in a networked environment. A follow on class on supporting Windows 7 in the desktop enviroment 70-685 is planned for the near future. This non-credit continuing education course involves 40 hours of class time. In the Network+ class you will learn earn about networking design from historical CoAx cable to modern fiber optics. The international, vendor-neutral certification proves competence in areas such as PC installation, preventative maintenance, networking, security and troubleshooting. CompTIA A+ certified technicians also have excellent customer service and communication skills to work with clients. This non-credit continuing education course involves over 80 hours of class time. You will shop for and buy parts to build and configure your own computer. You will install Windows XP Professional Windows Vista and Windows 7 on your new computer and configure your system to boot to the OS of your choosing. Hands on experience combined with in-class and self study will prepare you to pass the two multiple choice exams required to become A+ (2009) certified: CompTIA A+ Essentials (220-701) exam measures the necessary competencies of an entry-level IT professional with a recommended 500 hours of hands-on experience in the lab or field. It tests for technical understanding of computer technology, networking and security, as well as the communication skills and professionalism now required of all entry-level IT professionals. CompTIA A+ Practical Application (220-702) exam is an extension of the knowledge and skills identified in CompTIA A+ Essentials, with more of a "hands-on" orientation focused on scenarios in which troubleshooting and tools must be applied to resolve problems. The CompTIA Server+ (2009 Edition) certification is a validation of “foundation” level server skills and knowledge, and is used by organizations and IT professionals around the globe including the Department of Defense. The exam covers a wide range of topics including RAID, network data storage, virtualization, disaster recovery and security procedures. This 40 hour continuing education class will build upon your existing skills with concepts that will help you on the job in dealing with server technologies.
