Cervara di Roma is a small village about 70 km east of Rome. It is situated at
the foot of the Regional Park of the Simbruini Mountains.
Given its distinct natural and urban characteristics, Cervara
offers a unique opportunity to study and understand the
reality of small historic centers located in central Italy.
Within the scope of the collaboration between the Town Council
of Cervara di Roma, the University of Arkansas and the Università
degli Studi Roma Tre, the Rome Center for Architecture and
the Humanities is actively engaged in developing a project
of a Study Center in Cervara. This multidisciplinary study
center would enjoy the task of proposing and developing
projects that are of relevance to Cervara and the surrounding
territory. The proposed center would act as an impetus to
promote cooperation between cultural and academic institutions,
the public administration as well international business
to create opportunities for the territory’s development.
With this aim in mind, various initiatives were organized
in order to envisage and define the role of the study center
in question.

I-
A symposium/seminar on the landscape, urban and architectural
planning on the town of Cervara di Roma was held on 22-24
June 2005 with the participation of academics and public
administrators, as well as institutional representatives
from Italy and the United States of America. University
professors and students from the Università degli
Studi Roma Tre and the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville,
joined forces with the UA Rome Center to contribute
to the success of the seminar. At the end of the event,
a conference entitled ‘Toward a Study Center’
was convened. Work by participating students was displayed
in a complementary exhibition held at the end of the event.

|
II-
During March 2006, a two-week workshop and
complementing seminar on the
theme of urban recovery were held in Cervara di Roma. Students and professors from Mississippi
State University and the UA Rome Center took part in
research projects concerning the future development of the
territory.

|
III-
A symposium/seminar on the theme of mobility and accessibility
in the territory of the Simbruini Mountains was held from

As
a sign of the ever growing collaboration between the Town
Council of Cervara di Roma and the University of Arkansas,
the former bestowed the annual award ‘il sasso della
pace’ on the former Vice-Chancellor and Provost of the University
of Arkansas, Dr. Robert Smith in 2001.
Promoting a dialogue on Cervara and actively discussing
the proposal to create a future study center in this special
hill-town would contribute immensely to the Cervara center’s
inception.
|
In
the same vein, the existing strong ties between Università
degli Studi Roma Tre and the University of Arkansas would
find expression in the proposed Cervara project which will
represent yet another occasion of joint collaboration in
research and education, this time in Lazio.
|
A
publication of the proceedings of the conference was presented
in mid-October 2006. The publication includes proposals
and conclusions of the Cervara workshop as well as a summary
of the dialogue on the establishment of a permanent study
center in Cervara di Roma. (see Events)
