VISIT TO RABY CASTLE

30 members visited Raby Castle .  The weather was glorious, very warm and sunny. We had a private conducted tour around the castle.
The gardens were lovely and there was an amazing hedge made out of yew trees.

We had a scenic ride home travelling along the A68.  A very enjoyable day. Many thanks to Eileen Drew for organising the day.

NATURE WATCH

Nature Watch has now got over 20 members.  On our annual visit to Washington Wildfowl and Wetlands centre todat we took 10 members and one guest from another U3A. The weather held fine and we were surprised at all the changes taking place there, including the building of a new salt water lake linked to the wear, to be opened in the summer.  Among large numbers of different types of wild waterfowl and waders on the Wader lake we were delighted to see 8 avocets, and watching the otters being fed was great fun.  There were quite a few species of captive waterfowl there which I hadn't seen before, and many spring flowers were in evidence.

VISIT TO THE BBC STUDIOS IN NEWCASTLE

On Febuary 28th 15 of us visited the the BBC,  we were met by Hal & Tony and given badge to wear ( in case we got lost ). First of all we were given a talk about the BBC in Newcastle, both radio and TV as reminised about our favourite presentersand programmes of yesteryear. We wear taken into the room where all the programmesare stored in an archive plus things such as obituries in case they are needed in a hurry.

In the main studio we were joined by Colin Briggs who gave us an interesting and informative insight into how a news bulletin is put together and then broadcast.  He explained that things can, and do, go wrong but also made it look very easy.  We had a group photograph taken sitting on the red Look North sofa.

The visit ended in the Tracey Beaker studio where three emebers assumed the roles of main presenter, sports reporter and weather man. They all did very well and it was great fun watching the recording with all the background features added.

I can certainly recommend thr tour and you can see where some of your licence money goes.

Afterwards the coach took us down to the quayside, the weather was beautiful and we were able to sit outside in the sunshine to enjoy our lunch.
