This innovative course includes a study of American History from the colonial period to America’s emergence as a world power in the 1890s that is completed in conjunction with the American Studies/ English 2 A course.  Through an integrated study of history with literature from American and British authors, students will explore historical developments and discover how literature, art, music, and philosophy reflected and shaped the historical events and social conditions of the Colonial Period, the Revolution and Early National Period, the Age of the Civil War and Reconstruction, and the Frontier Era.  Included are a treatment of all NJ State Core Standards and mandates.  This course will be taught cooperatively by one Social Studies teacher and one English teacher in a double period, five days a week, to provide integrated study.  Learning methods will include film, writing, exploration of primary documents, and the development of college prep skills.  In American Studies classes a greater emphasis is placed on alternative assessments, outside reading, research, projects, and student responsibility.  A high-school level text book is used in this course.  All major assignments (such as research processes and products, projects, papers, etc.) must be completed in order to receive credit for the course.
 
 
 
This course satisfies the NJ graduation requirement for one of the two years of American History and for one of four years of English.
