Twisted Hazels Orchard

THE LAND

The Toutle River flows from Mt. St. Helen's crater toward Columbia River's shore along rocky ridges,  forest, flood plain, and field. Half way along this stretch is Twisted Hazels Orchard, a 40 acre forest re-emerging from being clear-cut in 1991.

Plateau, south facing slope, wetland, and 500' of riparian zone along the Toutle river make up the greater land features on Twisted Hazels Orchard.  The forest is in the process of naturally reseeding itself with doug fir , red alder, maple, white oak, twisted hazel and all the other flora and fauna that flourish in Mt. St. Helen's volcanic soils and rise up under the NW sun and temperamental stormy sky.

THE PROJECT

Twisted Hazels Orchard is a harvesting camp mid-way between the Columbia River and Mt. St. Helen's crater.  We are in the process of developing the site's timber and food forestry potential through first gaining a better understanding of the land's seasonal cycles and abundant resources; then implementing site specific land works and encouraging species which provide wildlife habitat, soil building needs, food/medicinal crops and building/crafting materials .
